Le duché de Savoie et la Pax Hispanica autour du traité de Lyon (1601)

Alain Hugon

Abstracts

In 1601, the Peace treaty of Lyon was concluded between two actors : the king of France and the Duke of Savoy. At the background of this agreement, different strengths of power were drawn at various scales. This Peace modified the Italian balance of power because the Pax Hispanica, which ruled on the Peninsula from 1559, could not protect the Charles-Emmanuel's Dukedom. The Alpin Domain was not yet the privileged road of expansion for the Duke. The frontier born with these Peace articles put into a difficult position the Spanish Road and, in consequence, the Flanders supplies of Italians tercios because of the close proximity of French Royal forces. Finally, the french withdrawal from the Salucio Marquisate, occupied since 1588, emphasized a reorientation for the monarchy and a reformation of the national domain.
In fact, these few general remarks about the treaty of Lyon are unfounded and they don't have any application in the real course of diplomatic and military history. They are formulated a posteriori. They are rational and intellectual constructions of national historiographies. To understand these politic processes, the consideration in situ of the contingencies and the eventualities of the moment allows us to measure the real impact of the treaty in its time.
