Dear Readers,
The French Centre for Research on Contemporary China is excited to mark the 30th anniversary of its journal with this issue. Founded in 1992 in Hong Kong by Michel Bonnin and Raphaël Jacquet, the CEFC’s journal, Perspectives chinoises, was later joined by its sister journal, China Perspectives, in 1995. In the editorial by Marie Bellot and Justine Rochot, it is noted that both journals have undergone changes over the years, with only the English version of China Perspectives remaining as of 2023. As we commemorate this milestone, we are also acknowledging the recent closure of Perspectives chinoises and looking ahead to entering the fourth decade of China Perspectives next year.
Today is truly a moment that makes us proud, with our journal receiving recognition from various prestigious indexes and rankings, including French (HCERES), European (ERIH PLUS), and international (SSCI). This is a testament to the dedication and effort put in by our editorial team, making China Perspectives a leading publication in the field of Chinese studies. We are also proud to welcome all researchers in the humanities and social sciences who are exploring the complexities of contemporary China.
The journal is considered one of the flagships of the CEFC, which produces it and also provides broad support for research on China and the Chinese-speaking world. Anyone interested in the various internal (intellectual and cultural debates, labour, inequalities, tourism, etc.) and international (geopolitics, diasporas, globalised China, etc.) topics related to these areas is encouraged to participate. Similar to China Perspectives, the CEFC values researchers who explore original and innovative questions, while also emphasising the connection between the humanities, social sciences, and Chinese studies.
The diversity of writings in this issue demonstrates that the field is expansive and the topics always changing. With this in mind, we can look forward to another 30 years of China Perspectives.
On behalf of the editorial team, I would like to thank you, our readers, for your continuing support. I hope that you will find the current issue a stimulating and enjoyable read.
