Résumés
This article reflects on the operation of the network of quarantine offices and lazarettos in the Greek state during the first half of the 19th century. The paper consists of two parts: The first part presents the public health policy and the creation of the network of quarantine offices and lazarettos in Greece during the 19th century. Through specific examples, the second part examines how quarantine offices and lazarettos were used not only to control epidemic diseases, but also to monitor the movements of populations considered suspicious, threatening, or disorderly. Moreover, it describes the different treatments that health authorities reserved for travellers, depending on their socio-economic and religious status.
Cet article se penche sur le fonctionnement du réseau des bureaux de quarantaine et des lazarets dans l’État grec au cours de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. L’article se compose de deux parties : la première partie présente la politique de santé publique et la création d’un réseau de bureaux de quarantaine et de lazarets en Grèce au cours du XIXe siècle. À travers des exemples concrets, la seconde partie examine comment les bureaux de quarantaine et les lazarets étaient utilisés non seulement pour contrôler les maladies épidémiques, mais aussi pour surveiller les mouvements de populations considérées comme suspectes, menaçantes ou désordonnées. Elle décrit en outre les différents traitements que les autorités sanitaires réservaient aux voyageurs, en fonction de leur statut socio-économique et religieux.

Introduction
In September 1825, the Parliamentary Body of the Provisional Administration of Greece discussed the request of some citizens to reduce the length of their quarantine. The members of parliament decided that these citizens had to remain in the lazaretto under strict security until they had completed their cleansing. As they noted “when it comes to the health and safety of the Nation, all personal favors must be overlooked […] Such things do not take place in any part of the enlightened world, where lazarettos are established.” The Provisional Administration recognized the importance that Western European states attached to taking sanitary measures to deal with infectious diseases, particularly the primary tool of quarantine.
