Full text

1The current issue features three translated essays originally published in Cipango 24, entitled “Eugénisme dans le Japon moderne et contemporain” [Eugenics in modern and contemporary Japan]. It was supervised by Isabelle Konuma and her introduction – also translated here – summarises the key points that should inform any analysis of eugenics within the framework of Japanese Studies. Please note that one of the translations – the text by Arnaud Nanta – is a digest of two earlier publications by that author, one in French (Cipango 24) and one in English (National Races: Transnational Power Struggles in the Sciences and Politics of Human Diversity, 1840–1945, University of Nebraska Press, 2019).

2On behalf of the editorial committees, I would particularly like to thank Karen Grimwade for her elegant translations and Presses de Inalco for their technical support.
