The Journal Governance and Committees’ composition

What is the percentage of members holding a PhD on the editorial board?

Currently nobody has the title.

Is there a reading committee? Who participates in it?

We only have an editorial team.

Does the journal develop a special relationship with an academic institution? If so, what is it?

Although we have a close relationship with teachers from Universidade Mackenzie, Universidade de São Paulo, Faculdade de Belas Artes de SP, Escola da Cidade, Universidade de Minas Gerais, do Ceará, da Bahia, among others, it’s not a formal relationship, but a kind of informal exchange of ideas. In the 90s, however, there was a large space in the magazine for the publication of academic texts, from all over Brazil. Something that we would like to re-establish. Also, we’ve organized for more than 30 years a prize for the best brazilian conclusion works on academy, named Opera Prima.

Are there debates within the editorial board? If so, how are they made visible in the journal?

The editorial team meets weekly, discussing which articles will be produced for the inter-net and for the printed editions. However, they are internal discussions. On the printed versions, we use to tell this inside stories on the editorial letter.

What are the economical, formal and intellectual relations to the publisher (resources and constraints)?

We are based on private resources, from the publisher/owner, and maintained by advertising and subscribers. We do not have any constraints on editorial field regarding those maintainers or others. We believe in journalism.

Research and Journal

What milieu does the journal plug into? What audience is targeted?

Since the foundation, in the 70s, our audience has been architects, urban planners, landscapers and scholars in the field. We technically explain the projects and give our view on the work, in order to enable complementary research works.

From the journal’s point of view what are the outcomes expected from the research in architecture? (urban planning and landscape architecture)?

Research supporting the practice. Research that highlights the multidisciplinary nature of the profession.

According to you is there a difference between research and innovation? If there is, what does it consist of? And what about research and expertise?

I think that there is no innovation without research, although there is research without in-novation (almost always when there is an addiction to the repetition of useless or already answered questions). I also think that research is inherent to specialization, regardless of the types of sources consulted.

How does research content fit into the journal’s plan?

A year ago our editorial space increased (working simultaneously in digital and print media) and, with that, we are interested in opening space for the contribution of researchers.

During the last year, how many researchers contributed to the journal?

About five, such as Daniele Pisani, Rodrigo Tavares and Nivaldo Andrade.

Considering the past ten years, what transformations have occurred concerning the relationships between research and the profession? between research and public discussion?

I think that especially in the area of urban design there were gains. I realize the existence of researches towards a new — inclusive and multidisciplinary — methodology for the pro-jects. In the field of the history of architecture, however, I notice the repetition of themes and sources already exhausted.

How do you select peer-review experts? How do you deal with peer re-viewed assessments and disclose them to the authors? (Problems and anecdotes)

We don’t use it. We are not an academic magazine.

What is the part played by the lay out management? (Text/image, typography, cover-front)?

It is a fundamental part of the articles. It is the way to communicate visually with our audience.

Editor-in-Chief’s Statement

What kind of journal did you have in mind when the journal was launched or when you were appointed Editor-in-chief and has it evolved?

PROJETO magazine it was the first magazine I read when I was an architecture student, in the 90s. I liked the balance between practice and theory. Then, I realized the usefulness of field research in articles such as the regional production of in Brazil ; then, the importance of the accurate graphic ; then, the importance of talking to the actors involved in the projects. In short, I think our contribution is keep doing serious journalism about architecture and urbanism. But we can increase reflection and criticism forming a network of collaborators.

What journals in the field of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture do you read regularly? Occasionally? What journal do you read outside the field?

Regularly: The Architectural Review, Arquitectura Viva, Domus, Casabella, Abitare, Plot.
Occasionally:
The Plan, Engramma.
Outside the field:
Serrote, Quatro Cinco Um.
