The kings’ marble. International symposium, 22-24 May 2003, château de Versailles

Marble is one of the modern era’s least studied materials. This conference brought together specialists from different backgrounds, approaching the topic by the sites of extraction, research, the use of different types, techniques, transport, commerce, metiers, exchanges, and even the diverse uses of marble in royal residences, both in France and other European countries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In collaboration with Aix-Marseille Université.

The conference papers were published in April 2013 by the Publications de l’université de Provence, edited by Pascal Julien. They were republished in the Bulletin du Centre de recherche du château de Versailles in January 2016.

The Centre of Research led an ethnological enquiry titled, The marble decorations of the Château de Versailles, from quarry to building. The skills of the marble masons of the Montagne Noire (Minervois).
