Servandoni et son temps : architecture, peinture, spectacles

Actes (partiels) du colloque, 27-29 juin 2016, Centre André-Chastel (Paris)
Servandoni and His Time: Architecture, Painting, Performances. Partial symposium proceedings, 27-29 June 2016, Centre André-Chastel (Paris)
Edited by Jérôme de La Gorce

These six papers correspond for the most part to research presented on the occasion of a tribute paid to Jean-Nicolas Servandoni during the international symposium ‘Servandoni and his time: architecture, painting, performances’, held in Paris on 27, 28 and 29 June 2016 by the Centre André Chastel and the Labex Écrire une histoire nouvelle de l’Europe, with the support of the Groupe Histoire Architecture et Mentalités Urbaines (Ghamu) and the Société Archéologique de Sens. The symposium was overseen by Francesco Guidoboni and Jérôme de La Gorce.

With the exception of the essay by Léonore Losserand, which explores several unpublished sources concerning the building of Saint-Sulpice, the essays published here deal with subjects other than architecture, which has been treated by our Italian colleagues. Painting occupies a prominent place, such as the paintings that Servandoni intended for the Salons du Louvre or for art lovers, and the relationship he maintained with François Boucher throughout his career. His activity as a set decorator is also illustrated with the projects designed by the Dumesnils for public celebrations organized by the City of Paris. Completing this set is historical research on the Servandoni family, based on documents that were unpublished or little-known.
