1While there is no lack of articles, chapters and even books in French devoted to particular exhibitions, the bibliography was lacking in the kind of wide, overall survey offered by this book, recently translated from the German for Les Editions du Regard. Not that this is the first or only book on the history of exhibitions. As far back as 1967, Georg Friedrich Koch devoted his Die Kunstaussetullung to the phenomenon, whose history he traced from its origins in antiquity to the end of the 18th century. More recently, the most significant exhibitions of the 20th century were examined from a German point of view by the Berlin exhibition Stationen der Moderne (1998) and its accompanying catalogue.
