1Horizontal Art History and Beyond: Revising Peripheral Critical Practices makes a valuable contribution to current debates on art historical methodology. Its starting point is the concept of horizontal art history” elaborated by Polish art historian Piotr Piotrowski (1952-2015) as an alternative to the hierarchical power dynamics inherent in centre/periphery-based disciplinary models. While his own research focus was primarily of East-Central Europe, Piotrowski’s critical writings have global relevance and reach today. They have inspired the current generation of scholars to continue the work of dismantling and challenging the politics and validity of discursive structures deeply rooted in Cold-War-era binary thinking. This volume presents a remarkable selection of essays by a diverse array of established and emerging scholars who, each in their own way, explore fresh ways to put the ethos of horizontality into practice in their research. They map out new political horizons and ambitions for art history as a discipline. Structurally, the book focuses on questions of democracy and locality, tackling methodological contradictions and challenges head on, as well as remaining open to alternatives to horizontal art history. Topics included by the contributors span: debates around the “critical museum; parallels between postsocialism and postcoloniality; the idea of the “close other”; exhibition making as horizontal art history; “allegories of orientation”; and computation. The volume provides a rich tool box for anyone wishing to discover new frameworks for rethinking the cultural field. As such, I have no doubt that in addition to becoming a core reader for methodology courses in art history, the volume has considerable interdisciplinary appeal.
