1Press article, poem, column, essay, review, or opinion piece… Art criticism cannot be defined by its shape: it is shifting, multifaceted, ungraspable and all consistent with the purpose of this very specific exercise. It is thus hardly surprising that it seized upon PechaKucha©, imposed by the AICA-France Elisabeth Couturier Prize for Art Criticism. This meticulously timed format requires candidates to give an oral commentary on a work, a trend, or an artistic scene for 6 minutes and 40 seconds, during which twenty slides are shown every twenty seconds. A constraint? Certainly, but one that, far from hindering the expression of criticism, offers it freedom of tone and form.

2On October 10th, 2024, in the auditorium of the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, partner of the AICA-France Prize, ten art critics provided striking proof of this. The jury did indeed reward Clémentine Mercier for her “New Mythologies of Mycology,” but along with her, it was the diversity and richness of the voices expressed that triumphed: Sandra Barré’s historical perspective, Guillaume Benoit’s aesthetic rigor, Antoinette Jattiot’s sharing of experience, Colin Lemoine’s literary flamboyance, Christian Noorbergen’s poetic fervor... So many approaches and styles serving the same purpose: a reflection on art and creation, here and now. Because art criticism is a gesture more than a genre, a gaze offered to the work and to those who create it: artists Anaïs Tondeur (chosen by Rozenn Canevet), Corentin Darré (presented by Samy Lagrange), Carla Adra (chosen by Victoria Le Boloc’h-Salama), Roy Köhnke (presented by Hélène Soumaré)... Thus, if we had to name a single winner of the AICA-France Prize, it would be art criticism itself: rebellious, vibrant, essential.
