Focus and Scope

Comunicação e Sociedade is an academic journal that aims to encourage a deeper analysis of communicational phenomena and, simultaneously, contribute to interpreting social reality, by using theoretical and methodological tools from the diverse fields of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Journal Structure

Comunicação e Sociedade is organised into three sections:

  1. Collection of theme articles;

  2. Varia;

  3. Book reviews / interviews.

Editorial Policy

Comunicação e Sociedade is an open access academic journal, that adheres to the stringent standards of peer-reviewing, and which is aimed both at established academics and junior researchers, national and foreign alike. The journal invites articles for publication that promote a deeper understanding of communication phenomena, and that build upon theories and methodologies of the various fields of the Humanities and Social Sciences that converge in the broad field of Communication Sciences. It is open to contributions from academics and practitioners alike, in Portuguese and in English, and provides authors with an open interaction space.

Comunicação e Sociedade invites proposals for original and unpublished academic papers (and not previously available in preprints repositories) on the topics related to the calls for papers and the objectives and scope of the journal, in the form of (1) articles and (2) book reviews. Interviews are also invited for consideration. Contributions should be drafted taking into account their relevance and accessibility to a Communication Sciences audience. Articles can be submitted in Portuguese or in English. The journal editors will subsequently order a translation into the other language, at the author expense. Works signed by doctors will be evaluated, in single authorship or co-authoring with doctoral candidates and masters. This restriction does not apply to the submission of reviews and interviews, which may be signed by doctoral candidates.

Editorial Procedures

1. Two call for papers are issued every year. Authors of manuscripts submitted are informed of the editorial decision within 3 months after the closing date of the call for papers. In addition, authors may permanently submit papers that are not subject to thematic calls, and the editorial decision will be informed up to 3 months after submission. Papers submitted to Comunicação e Sociedade are subject to a preliminary analysis against the following acceptance criteria: relevance to the respective call for papers, to the objectives and scope of the journal, full compliance with editorial guidelines, and appropriate research article structure and contents. Articles that meet these acceptance criteria are then approved for possible publication, and sent to the referees for reviewing, in accordance with the procedures described in sections 2 and 3. The reviewers, who are academic experts and practitioners from different institutional and geographical backgrounds, will be recruited from the editorial board and from the areas of Communication Sciences and other Social Sciences and Humanities, depending on the journal theme and on the contents of the papers submitted.

2. The decision to publish the work submitted to the journal is made by the Editor, the Associate Editor and the editors. The decision to publish depends on the assent of two external reviewers, one of them being native speaker of the language of the article, following a double-blind reviewing process.

3. Once the article is submitted for external reviewing, the two reviewers are asked to make one of the following recommendations, based on the assessment of the academic quality of the article, originality and relevance to the call for papers and to the objectives and scope of the journal:

A. Accept unconditionally;

B. Accept with minor revisions;

C. Accept with major revisions – resubmission required;

D. Reject.

Accept unconditionally applies to articles that require simple revisions, but that are publishable in their original form in all other respects. Accept with minor revisions applies to articles that require simple content revisions. Articles that are accepted with major revisions, and which require a resubmission, demand more substantial content revision and a re-review. The articles that are offered this recommendation are subject, therefore, to a second round of reviewing, whenever possible by the same two reviewers.

Each article and book review can only be reviewed and resubmitted once.

Authors will be notified of the outcome of the review process by email and, in the case of recommendations B or C, invited to submit a new version within 4 weeks of notification.

Once accepted, the final version is edited and, prior to publication, proofs are sent to authors, to seek their approval for publication. At this stage, authors are requested not to make any changes to the scientific contents of their manuscript. The authors are informed of the journal volume in which their article will be published.

No fees are charged to authors for processing and submitting articles.

Peer Review Policy

As mentioned in the previous point, the journal follows a double-blind peer review process. The decision to publish articles and book reviews depends on the assent of two external reviewers, one of them being a native speaker of the language of the work. The reviewers, who are academic experts and practitioners from different institutional and geographical backgrounds, will be recruited from the editorial board and from the areas of Communication Sciences and other Social Sciences and Humanities, depending on the journal theme and on the contents of the papers submitted.
