Vol. 35 | Time and the Media

Reception of proposals: 4 September, 2018

Editors: Emília Araújo (CECS, Portugal) & Patrícia Matos (UFF Brazil)

The history of the social and cultural uses of time has undoubtedly been marked by the effects of science and technology. Concepts such as emergency, duration, waiting, delays, acceleration and slowing down are now central to understanding the intersecting political, social and emotional dynamics resulting from the mobilisation of digital technologies. In view of the media’s increasing relevance in day-to-day lives, it is important to think about the ways that time and space have become the object of use and composition within the context of the media, thereby raising new questions and concerns about the importance of space and time in the affirmation of individual and collective identities. There is therefore an urgent need to question and extend our knowledge about how the media reconfigures social practices and different representations of time.

This issue of the journal Comunicação e Sociedade aims to explore some of these questions linked to different uses of the media: How is time used in today’s media? How does the media convey technological and digital time, in light of the complexity of time-past and time as memory? How are the different times of the media articulated with the times of us and with the media? What relationship is established between the times of acceleration/slowing down in the media, and the inherent speed of media-based communication? What does the time-based agenda mean in the context of communication and the media and what does this represent for understanding the forms of the use of time as a resource - under what conditions and with what implications for groups, organizations and individuals? What theoretical resources can we mobilise to understand the activity of the media today? What new reconceptualisations are required to understand how the media deals with, and reconfigures, social, historical and cultural time? These questions extend the range of issues associated to the media, communication, and time - from an epistemologically instigative and necessary perspective.

This call for papers is therefore for articles that analyse questions of time and temporality, in a wide array of different social contexts, including art and science.
