Few publications have taken an interest in the symbolic dimension linking tourism and cultural heritage, that is the relationship that can be upheld between the two when places, objects and experiences are made significant. This, however, presupposes letting go of the traditional opposition between authenticity and “touristification”, in order to understand what an opening up to tourism stands to bring to cultural heritage in terms of outreach.

This issue broaches the matter from two parallel angles of attack in order to construct an approach to tourism in terms of outreach. The first attempts to characterize the articulations between existing forms of heritage outreach and tourist packages. The second objective is more theoretical in nature, exploring the potential gain of an outreach approach as applied to tourism, seen as a symbolic space of communication and relationality.

The articles included show the commonalities that exist or have existed between tourist and heritage outreach, explore the network of actors and institutions surrounding them and the social representations that they demonstrate. An interdisciplinary study of “tourism outreach” as a specific means of rendering significance is thus made possible.
