Appraisal Process

Articles in the themed report and for Varia are subject to double-blind peer review.

Appraisal of articles in the themed report

Each themed issue is coordinated by guest editors, overseen by the editorial directors, who approve the call for contributions proposed by the guest editors. Submitted articles are selected jointly by the guest editors and editorial directors.

For the double-blind peer review, the guest editors provide a list of experts who can be contacted. This list is added to by the editorial directors, who are responsible for assigning each submission to two experts: one who is on the editorial committee, and one who is not. The guest editors are not informed of these assignments. The journal’s editorial directors are fully in charge of organising the review process: choosing the experts per the criteria set out above; anonymisation of the texts; and receipt of the review reports.

The decision to publish, based on the review reports, is made jointly by the guest editors and the editorial managers. Once an article is accepted or rejected after review, the guest editors are in charge of notifying the authors and substantiating the decision. If an article is accepted, the authors have a period of time to provide a revised version taking account of the review reports. The successive versions of the articles in the themed report are monitored by the guest editors and the journal’s editorial directors. The editorial directors ultimately approve the article before publication.

Appraisal of Varia articles

Articles for Varia are under the sole responsibility of the journal managers (editorial directors and section editor). The Varia section editor carries out an initial appraisal of the submitted article, and requests any necessary changes before sending it for double-blind review. The Varia section editor is fully responsible for organising the review process: choosing expert reviewers per the criteria set out above, receiving review reports, taking a decision on publication based on these reports, and notifying the authors of acceptance or rejection.
