Bibliographie complète de Jean Gottmann

With 414 entries, this work presents the most complete and updated version of the bibliography of Jean Gottmann (1915-1994), the French and cosmopolitan geographer, known for his studies of urban geography, and especially for those on the megalopolis of the Northeastern seaboard of the United States. In the 1990s, the posthumous rediscovery of his political geography, and in particular of his concept of iconography, opened the way for a reassessment of his pioneering role in cultural geography and to understand the transition from regional geography to the geography of networks. This bibliography thus constitutes a guide for the historian of geographical thought, indispensable for understanding the genesis and evolution of Gottmann’s overall work and, in general, an invitation to reread the writings of each author in the context of their broader scientific production as well as, of course, in the framework of the scientific and intellectual context of the time.

1Gottmann's geographical literature spans over sixty years of activity -- between 1933 and 1994 -- and is composed of 412 titles, published mostly in French and English. His writings were translated in fourteen languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Tamil, Dutch, Turkish, Slovenian, Japanese, Polish, Yiddish, German and modern Greek, still neither of his 21 books (including 13 monographs) written in French or in English were never translated in the other main language. This, as well as the growing specialization within 20th century geography, partly explains the fragmented reception of his geographical work, which has been recognized as having contributed to urban, regional, political and historical geography. If all these sub-disciplinary specializations are encompassed by his holistic view of human geography, they do not exhaust it: his pioneering contributions to cultural geography, to the study of diasporas and to the geography of telecommunications are not less important.

2In terms of his regional geography at least four main areas of specializations can be identified:

3a) Palestine/Israel, with openings to the Middle East and the Mediterranean, mostly in the first three decades of activity;
b) France: from rural and agricultural geography to foreign trade, raw materials, colonial /political and urban geography;
c) the United States: economic, regional, cultural and urban geography (since the 1940s);
d) Europe: economic, regional, cultural and urban geography.

4A few minor regional specializations could also be added: e) on Soviet Russia’s economic geography, mostly during the 1930s; and f) his urban geographical studies on specific places at different scales such as Oxford, and Japan (since the 1970s).

5Still, as much as a list of his sub-disciplinary contributions does not allow to recognize the evolution of his geographical thought, even such a regionalization allows to only partially capture the fact that, reflecting the post-World War Two change, with Megalopolis his geography moved outside the regional monograph tradition, his “chains of crossroads” opening to a multi-scalar geography of networks.

6Following the lesson of Demangeon, Gottmann’s human geography was first an economic geography, which in avoiding any risk of environmental determinism, rather aimed at understanding the cultural and psychological dimensions of territorial communities. If his complete bibliography thus shows an evolution of his interests from agricultural and rural regions towards urban geography, his pioneering cultural approach to economic geography often included also a political dimension. This is visible not just in his work on Palestine (which conveyed an early Zionist influence of Michael Berchin), or in his geography of France, especially his work on the geography of raw materials. The latter in fact took place in the context of the scientific internationalism’s late attempt at preventing World War Two by offering a solution to the economic claims of the ‘have nots’ powers, thus incorporating the geopolitical dimension. His early exposure to scientific internationalism was reinforced at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, with his experience at the United Nations (1946-47), and in his international career, especially after Megalopolis, showing an intellectual trajectory that moved beyond the age of nationalisms, toward a fully internationalist perspective, centered on the role of science and education.
If the war and its aftermath furthered his interest in political geography, some of his most relevant books (1952, 1973) and essays would especially be dedicated to it. In particular, his notion of “regional iconographies” pioneered the role of representations in the human organization of the world, replacing the then dominant functionalist approach with a cultural approach. As Claval wrote to this author: “Iconographies allowed him to grasp simultaneously what symbolizes and structures the regions of yesterday’s geographers and ensure their permanence, and what symbolizes and structures the globalized world of the second half of the 20
th century, of which Megalopolis provided the first great interpretation”. Therefore, his human geography moved from the economic to the cultural, political, and finally urban geography (without omitting a social, communitarian, focus and even an early attention to environmental problems) in a movement that his bibliography allows to reconstruct. Even a simple reading of the titles of his published work already reveals his transition from a geography of regions to networks that incorporates a cultural perspective.

7Jean Gottmann's first official bibliography -- covering his writings between 1933 and 1984 -- was published in Patten, J. (ed.), 1983 in The Expanding City, Essays in honour of Professor Jean Gottmann, London-New York Academic Press, pp. xvii-xxxv.

8The same bibliography was reprinted, with just one addition relative to 1983, the same year in: The Coming of the Transactional City, printed in College Park by the University of Maryland's Institute for Urban Studies. A list of selected urban geography’s essays between 1949 and 1987 is in Jean Gottmann’s and Robert Harper’s Since Megalopolis, the Urban Writings of Jean Gottmann (1990a).

9Thanks to the opening of the Fond Gottmann, donated to the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département des cartes et plans by his widow Bernice Adelson Gottmann, it was possible to verify his entire bibliography on the same notebook where Gottmann kept note of his own publications.

10This information was compared to the one available in the Table of contents of four of his thematic volumes of collected essays previously published in different journals: Etudes sur l'Etat d'Israël (1959b), Essais sur l'aménagement de l'espace habité (1966f), La città invincibile (1983f) and Since Megalopolis (1990a).

11A previous version of this bibliography published on Cybergeo (L. Muscarà 1998) was re-read by Jean-Yves Sarazin (1967-2016), then curator of the Fond Gottmann and later director of the Département des cartes et plans at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris (2010-2016). With minor changes it appeared in Ekistics (2003) and in the CTHS re-edition of La politique des États et leur géographie (2007). The present version contains almost thirty new entries, including his juvenile writings on Palestine.
Moreover, it was possible to check almost all entries on the original sources, allowing at times to integrate the existing bibliographic information.
