Editorial Policy

Cybergeo is an open access magazine. Its objective is to allow a wide dissemination of scientific results at no cost to the reader or the author. In return, we ask the authors to scrupulously respect the presentation instructions indicated below (information on the author, images, tables, bibliography) in order to facilitate the editorial preparation work and to guarantee a quality publication.

The submission

Would you like to submit an article? Cybergeo offers an online platform for submitting your manuscripts:

Look out! The journal expects authors to ensure that their articles are written in accordance with the current rules of spelling and syntax. Careful proofreading is therefore required from authors before submission. An article that does not respect the basic rules of writing may be rejected for this simple reason.

In order to submit to Cybergeo, the author accepts not to submit his or her article to another journal. He also agrees to anonymize all his documents, text and illustrations.

If this is the first time you are submitting an article, please register first and create your "author" profile.

(For book reviews, it is strongly advised to contact the journal beforehand to check that no review is already being written or submitted for the chosen book).

DO NOT RE-SUBMIT THE SAME ARTICLE SEVERAL TIMES. If you encounter the slightest difficulty, you must repeat the procedure for submitting your article in the same dossier. If you need help, download the "submission guide for authors".

Warning! Not every submitted article is accepted. You can only mention it in your publications after it has been accepted by the reading committee. Moreover, articles cannot be submitted to several journals at the same time or have been previously published.

Articles are published in one of the European languages with titles, abstracts and keywords in English and French.

The evaluation

Each submission is assigned a unique submission number that will remain the same until the editorial preparation stage.

The articles are then submitted to a pre-selection committee and then to the reading committees, according to the following steps:

Spontaneous submissions are studied in the first instance by a pre-selection committee, which checks that the submission complies with the journal's criteria: argumentation, positioning, scientific approach explained and discussed, issues in the national and international debate, quality of the bibliography, quality of spelling, quality of images and cartography, respect for anonymity, non-plagiarism, etc.

Articles are rejected when they are out of the scope of the journal, or poorly written, or superficial, etc. In this case, a reasoned opinion is sent to the authors with a proposal for referral to another journal or recommendations.

For submissions that pass this first cycle of evaluation, a second cycle is started, and the article is submitted for evaluation to the reading committees. At least two readers, who remain anonymous throughout the process, are chosen from among the committee members to give their opinion. External experts may also be solicited. The author can follow events during the current evaluation cycle online. The entire procedure is carried out in compliance with double-blind evaluation.

At the end of the second evaluation cycle, an anonymized summary of the evaluators' opinions (acceptance or rejection, requests for modifications or additions) is communicated to the author. Requests for modifications lead to the submission of a revised version on the online submission platform within 6 months, followed by a new review by the evaluators who check whether the authors have responded to the requests made to them in the summary. The evaluation may take place over three or even four cycles before eventual acceptance for publication. The evaluators may rely on the following reading grid to formulate their opinion:

  • Has the text been, to your knowledge, already published or simply submitted to another journal?

  • Is the subject suitable for the scientific communication journal Cybergeo?

  • Is the information sufficient: relevant, original? Up to date?

  • Are the issues and challenges sufficiently clear (introduction)?

  • Is the demonstration sufficiently rigorous and well-argued?

  • Does the style seem correct to you?

  • Do the tables and diagrams seem necessary and clear?

  • Are the maps: correctly captioned? easily legible?

  • Is the bibliography: appropriate? up to date nationally and internationally?

  • Do the abstract and keywords express the essence of the text?

  • Does the title reflect the content of the article?

  • How does the length seem to you: correct? excessive? insufficient?

This work of meticulous rereading and accompanying authors through the evaluations during the different cycles requires a significant investment by the readers in order to help authors improve their article and unlock its full potential. The journal must also maintain its editorial line, demanding yet not exclusive, designed to help authors to enhance the value of their research through the help of the readers' work.

Accepted articles are de-anonymized and sent to the proofreader who will correspond with the authors. During this stage, a guide to formatting the article and writing the bibliography, as well as a guide to good practice for writing and translating metadata, are offered to authors. Cybergeo is particularly attached to the quality of the metadata that allows authors to significantly increase the impact of their publication on the web.

Once the metadata is corrected, it is proofread by proofreaders in the language concerned, then validated and sent to a Spanish translator. The metadata are published in at least three languages: French, English and Spanish. Some articles are also selected for the translation of their metadata into Chinese.

The finalized articles are then published online and freely accessible on the journal's website. The rejection rate for submissions is around 40%.

Electronic articles have unprecedented potential by providing instant access to a network of resources, references and debates. We therefore strongly encourage authors to insert hypertext links to their sources (cited articles, simulations, databases, etc.) in order to increase interactivity. For our part, we publish the reactions that your article will have aroused on the blog of the Cybergeo Conversation.

International outlook

From the outset, the journal has published articles in all European languages, but for many years it has been committed to a voluntary editorial policy of internationalization of its publications. It thus offers the translation of metadata in at least three languages: French, English, Spanish and Chinese (selected articles). More and more regularly, full articles selected by the steering and editorial committees are translated into English, Spanish or Chinese when these articles make an original and highly relevant contribution to the themes likely to interest these audiences.


A contract of assignment of rights is signed between the two parties when the article is accepted for publication.

The articles put online are dated and referenced by a number of the journal (each article constitutes a number). The articles are thus published without delay, as and when they are accepted. Each publication displays at the bottom of its page the electronic reference to be used for any citation or bibliographic reference. A specific DOI is also added in the hours following publication.

This statement appears at the end of each article.

The author is authorized to deposit his pre-print or article accepted and/or published in pdf format on an institutional open archive site in accordance with the copyright policy mentioned in Sherpa/Romeo Publisher Policies & Self Archiving and provided that he indicates the publication url of the original article in Cybergeo.

Presentation standards for your article

The electronic support encourages short articles, of the order of 50,000 characters, but the journal accepts longer texts for feature articles. In every case, certain presentation criteria must be respected:

The metadata

In addition to the original language, titles, abstracts and keywords must be in English and French presented at the beginning of the article.

The quality of the metadata (title, abstract, keywords) is essential for a good diffusion of your publications. These texts are used by search engines, professional databases, or open archive sites. Internet users become aware of your work by first consulting the metadata.

Here we provide you with recommendations to help you adopt a concise and rigorous writing style with easily analyzable concepts to facilitate access to your article, without sacrificing the richness and diversity of the language. You can also download the guide of good practices for writing and translating metadata in the appendix.

The title

We recommend that you choose a strong and informative title that highlights the content of your article. You will choose precise words that situate your work in its generality and specificity. Prefer titles of 8 to 10 words. All metadata will be translated into one or two or more foreign languages. Avoid allusions that would be too exclusively addressed to a non-international audience.

Once your title has been written, test its translation reversibly from French to English and from English to French to see if the meaning is preserved. We recommend that you use the free Deepl translation software.

The summary

The summary is read much more often than the full article. For the Internet user it is an opportunity to see if your publication corresponds to his or her research. Your article must therefore show in an attractive way what are the highlights of your approach and the contribution of your results to the advancement of knowledge. This exercise is quite different from a comprehensive account of the content of the article. It is essential to adopt a precise construction and vocabulary. In less than 250 words, you will synthesize the research question and its context, the essential results and their possible implications.

Under no circumstances should the summary be a repetition of the introduction, do not repeat paragraphs of the text. Write it in such a way that there are no ambiguities or stylistic effects such as untranslatable puns. Think about it: the abstract will be translated at least into English and Spanish, possibly also into Chinese. Don't make complicated sentences. The structure of sentences in English is often very different from that of sentences in French, try to adopt a clear and simple structure.

Once you have written your summary, test its translation reversibly from French to English and from English to French to see if the meaning is preserved. Make sure that the keywords from the speciality are correctly translated by DeepL. You can use the keyword index mentioned below for this purpose.

The key words

The journal has created a keyword index in French and English.

You will start from this list for the choice of your keywords in these languages and in another possible language of publication. These words can be included in the title and abstract. We no longer create new keywords in the index, except for the rare case of repeated requests. However, if you wish to use a keyword that is not in the list, you can put it in the title and/or the abstract.

You will integrate the keywords for the geographical index from the following lists:

You will be able to add in your list the names of places not referenced in these indexes that your article would deal with more specifically (e.g. Lyon).

The text

In order to speed up the online publishing of your article in open access, your final version will have to respect the presentation required by the journal, so we suggest that you download the OpenEdition template for word: and follow the styling instructions for the different parts of your document.

If you encounter difficulties with the OpenEdition template, you can format your article by applying the classic word template as follows.

For the text: please apply the "Normal" style without tabs. Under no circumstances should you use tabs, spaces or page breaks, they will disappear when your article will be online.

For the titles, please apply the style Title 1, Title 2, Title 3 according to the levels. These styles are accessible on your toolbar where the "Normal" style is by default:

The links must refer to sites accessible on the web and not to local files.

Tables will be made in Word (or equivalent) through the menu "table + insert".

Excel (or equivalent) graphs will be converted into images (see below for recommendations for images).

Quotations are indicated in right quotation marks (or quotes) and in italics. Citation references are made directly in the text and not by footnotes. A citation ends with a parenthesis indicating the author, the year and possibly the page number. Ex. (Thomas, 2001, p.34) or (Thomas, 2001; Hagget, 2001). If the author's name is cited in the sentence, indicate the date and possibly the page number in brackets.

Footnotes can be found at the bottom of the page with a call for footnotes in the text.

Additional images and files

The images

Before submitting an article to the journal, authors should ensure that the rules concerning figures and tables in general, and maps in particular, are correctly applied.

In the article, the presentation of images is as follows:

  1. Title of the illustration

  2. Illustration

  3. Source of illustration (if applicable) below the image and embedded in the image

  4. Caption of the illustration (if applicable, if not shown in the image)

For the maps do not forget to indicate the scale.

(Carto)graphic reminders

The construction of the figures must above all be accurate, taking care to propose a choice of representation adapted to the information represented. As far as maps are concerned, the 10 laws of cartography outlined by Nicolas Lambert ( should be relied upon first and foremost, which reminds us that the map is a construction, a scientific as well as an artistic object, carrying a message that must be correctly perceived by the public for whom the document is intended.

The rules and practices detailed in the literature on this subject should therefore be respected, while taking care to ensure that the final presentation of the document (layout, etc.) is expressive and pleasant. Semiotic rules must be applied, particularly for color1, the elements of a cardboard must be correctly nested, and the elements of the map and the legend must be represented in the same size and layout. A raw output from a graphic or cartographic document creation software is thus very often a document with little communication orientation: for publication, care must be taken to improve the figure in order to make it more readable, more comprehensible and adapted to its recipient.

Figures should be provided in high resolution (see below image format) and deposited one by one as additional files on the submission site; the choice of characters (font and size) should allow for easy reading; the use of sans serif fonts will be preferred. It is desirable that the author's name and source be attached to the figure in the version for publication and indicated below the figure in the text.

The title of your illustrations

The titles of the illustrations will be placed above the illustrations and numbered by type: tables, maps, figures, photos, boxes etc. The titles do not appear in the illustration, but in the text and will respect the following presentation:

The source of your illustrations

The source of the illustration must be clearly indicated and placed both within and below the illustration. The source of the data used to create the illustration (e.g. US Census, 2001) and the source of the illustration itself should be indicated if the author is using an illustration already published in a book (with the author's agreement).

Submitting additional files

Illustrations must also be submitted separately one by one in "Add an additional file" when you submit them on our online submission site. In order to properly identify the image, please enter the following information in the file name when submitting the additional file:

To avoid any errors, you must also insert in a lower resolution each image in its place in the article or, failing that, you will indicate in the right place in your article the name of the file to be integrated provided. You will also indicate the precise location of the tables with the file name if you have put your tables in additional files so that there is no confusion.

Also, remember to check that the references cited in the body of the text correspond to the numbering of the illustrations before submitting your article.

Image format

Authors are advised to ensure that the illustrations have sufficient resolution to be legible in print, at least 200 to 300 dpi and are in RGB mode.

An image inserted in a Word document (or equivalent) provided in the body of the article should be at least 1000 pixels wide. When it is an appendix file, it should be between 2,500 and 3,500 pixels wide.

It is also important to ensure that the quality of the image suffers as little degradation as possible during processing, and that a reworked version is as faithful as possible to the original (in particular, it must be ensured that when an image is reduced, the height/width proportions are well preserved). The section " Obtaining optimal image quality" provide further information when creating your images.

Some essential recommendations

In Photoshop (or any equivalent image editor), it is advised not to use the "Save for Web" option, in order to limit certain degradations of the image (the decrease in resolution in particular); it is preferable to use the "save as" option which makes it possible to preserve the best possible quality of an image at the time of its saving.

Saving an image for publication on the Web can be done in GIF, JPEG, or PNG format, but should only be done in JPEG or PNG format. For electronic publishing, color images in JPEG and PNG format should be in RGB mode and not in CMYK mode (used for printing).

When to use these image formats

The GIF compression format is used for images containing flat colors, and few gradients (illustrations, drawings ...); this format should be avoided as much as possible, especially for photographs, because it supports only 256 colors and strongly degrades the quality of images;

The JPEG format is a compression format that manages several million colors, so it is a format suitable for photographs, paintings, etc., containing many gradients. However, it does cause a loss of image quality, so saving in this format should only be done by choosing the best possible quality at the time of saving:

  • if you are using the Photoshop software, when saving as JPEG, choose the highest quality (12),

  • if you are using the GIMP software, choose the maximum quality (100), make sure that the "Optimize" option is unchecked and that the "Subsampling" option is set to the best possible quality ("1x1, 1x1, 1x1"),

  • if you are using the PhotoFiltre software, choose the maximum quality (100) at the time of saving,

  • if you are using other image processing software, refer to the documentation of that software for information on how to save the JPEG image in the best possible quality.

  • the PNG format also supports several million colors and does not cause any loss in image quality. PNG is therefore particularly recommended for maps or schematics.

However, the size of a PNG file is larger than that of a JPEG file. It can be used for documents containing few illustrations. For a document containing many images, it may sometimes be preferable to use images in JPEG format. It is not recommended to use the PNG format for images containing areas of transparency because these areas will be misinterpreted by some browsers and will lose their transparency.

Obtaining optimal image quality

Web lossy image formats (JPEG and GIF) degrade image quality by, for example, removing or replacing pixels. The purpose of this type of format is to produce an image that is smaller than the original, by playing on alterations that are normally invisible (or nearly invisible) to the naked eye.

Saving in one of these formats should only be done at the end of the image processing phase, when the image is ready for final publication, as the image quality deteriorates further and further every time you save it, in an irreversible manner, which may result in images that are totally illegible or unusable at the time of publication. It is therefore strongly recommended to save an image in these formats only after all the desired changes have been made to the image.

Until the image is last modified, it should therefore only be saved in lossless formats (PSD, PNG, TIFF) and then in JPEG or GIF format. The PNG format is the most recommended format.


The bibliography should be grouped at the end of the text in alphabetical order by authors' names. The presentation is codified below for the various types of texts cited. A downloadable style sheet is available in the appendix of this page. It is requested to cut the links of the Zotero references to allow typographical corrections.

Cybergeo Data Papers Guidelines and Metadata template

Cybergeo's data papers section aims at becoming a central place of secondary geographical databases where:

  1. the data production is transparent and citable (unlike unpublished data),

  2. the work put by authors into the construction of geographical databases is documented so as to be reusable and transferable to new purposes,

  3. the data itself is evaluated and peer-reviewed, unlike what simple repository services offer,

  4. the datasets are accessible and searchable through dedicated semantic and geographical research engines.

On top of the generic guidelines that authors are asked to follow when they submit a paper to Cybergeo (regarding length, bibliographic styles, etc.), data papers should follow more specific guidelines in order to make the description of data standardised and comparable from paper to paper in the journal.

Specific guidelines for GeoData Papers

Make sure to deposit your data in an appropriate and sustainable repository and provide the appropriate authorisation certificates if the data includes elements under proprietary license.

In your data paper, you should document, explain and justify all the procedures used to transform the original records into the final geodatabase, demonstrate its need and use, and guide the reader on how to reuse it. The reader, given this information and the appropriate authorisation certificates, should be in a position to replicate your work entirely. Cybergeo Data Papers are stand-alone scientific articles that are devoted to the construction of geographical databases. Their publication can be followed by another article exploiting the analysis of such geographical data, but the two would be distinct in their scope and writing. The publication of a data paper does not ensure the acceptation of any other article, and vice versa.

In line with FAIR principles (, it is very important that your data paper provides detail on:

  • all the sources of the original records which were used to construct the database (organisation, timestamp, format, variables selected, link to the repository, etc.). 

  • all the processes which have led from the original records to the final database (data cleaning, aggregation, estimation, interpolation, modelling, etc.)

  • the spatial and scalar features of the data (points, lines, polygones, local, regional, etc.). What spatial units are they composed of? Are they compatible with any available GIS geometry? How do the output objects relate to the input objects (aggregation, transformation, etc.)?

  • the validation process of the geodatabase which guarantees its quality (technical validation, sensitivity and robustness analyses, comparisons with other data benchmarks, etc.). Make sure to mention the level of adequacy between the results of this validation process and the initial objectives for the construction of the geodatabase. State very clearly the strengths and limitations of the published dataset compared to other existing materials if any.

  • the value added of this database and any specific usage instructions to potential future users if necessary.

If necessary, Cybergeo reviewers may ask you to give temporary access to any intermediate data (that you do not intend to publish) so as to validate the process of data production and its added value.

Submissions in French, in Spanish and in English will be considered, but we recommend using the English language to ensure the maximum openness of the dataset.

Finally, please provide all metadata in conformity with ISO standards and the following template: (all metadata should also be included in a file called notice.txt placed at the root of the data directory or added to the zipfile of the dataset).

The Title must be concise and direct, so it should not contain acronyms or abbreviations.

If the data is part of a larger project, it is recommended to indicate the project at the end of the title.

The summary should allow the reader to understand the information offered by the content of the data in a clear and concise way. It is recommended not to use acronyms without explanation and to summarize the most important details in the first sentence.
