Abstracts

A late Vth century BC ditch at « La Mayrale » (Narbonne, Aude). A rescue excavation carried out in 1981 by Y. Solier in the Narbonne commune at Badens, sometimes referred to as « La Mayrale », allowed us to study a Roman workshop area which was superimposed over two protohistoric levels which are presented here. These badly preserved levels are characterised by strips of layers, as well as a truncated ditch. The fill of this ditch produced a homogeneous assemblage of material culture dated to the second half of the Vth century BC. Finally, a late Bronze Age occupation was also identified by the presence of scattered pottery in this same area. The nature and size of this lowland late Iron Age site can not be precisely defined. Its proximity to the Montlaurès oppidum several kilometres away, suggests that the site may well have been part of the VIth-Vth c. BC rural network of settlements which have been discovered as a result of field walking in this area.
