Abstracts

The Servanes-Cagalou protohistoric and Roman necropolis (Ist c. BC to IIIrd c. AD) at Mouriès: burials and funeral moniments.  The publication of the rescue excavation of severals Ist century BC cremations encouraged us to extend research into the group of ancient and recent discoveries from the Servanes-Cagalou necropolis: unpublished archived documents, fragments of architecture and funerary sculpture. This information thus allowed us to make the comparison with other burials from the Alpilles and lower Provence. This necropolis, which was used over a long period of time (from Ist century BC to the IIIrd century AD), is situated to the south-east of the Caisses oppidum at Mouriès. Cremation is the exclusive rite up to the end of Ist century BC, then coexists with burial up to the end of IIIrd century AD.  The funerary landscape is transformed with the adoption of complex foreign markers (burials with columns, pillars and funerary altrers). From the start of the Imperial period we see a great diversification in these funerary markers; some directly imported, or the result of the marriage of indigenous architectural elements with Greco-italic forms. A typological evolution, which is valid for the ensemble of the regional funerary monuments, is thus proposed.
