Documents pour l’Histoire du Français Langue Étrangère ou Seconde is published by the SIHFLES (Société Internationale pour l’Histoire du Français Langue Étrangère ou Seconde). Its scope is the period from the Renaissance to the 1970s, in all countries where French language has been taught as a foreign or second language. It deals with Historical aspects, issues regarding Linguistic and Educational policy, Foreign language theory, Acquisition, Teaching methods and Materials –grammar books, dictionaries, and bilingual works– as well as Institutions where French language has been taught, and authors who have made an impact in this area of research.

Documents pour l’Histoire du Français Langue Étrangère ou Seconde is an annual journal. The issues are theme-based and are either made up of the acts of conferences and workshops organised by the SIHFLES, or they are ordinary numbers coordinated by an editor appointed by the SIHFLES. The articles are usually written in French, but the journal also accepts articles written in other languages. The latter are accompanied by summaries in two languages (the language of the article and English, or French if the article is written in English) and key words. The Scientific Organizing Committees of the various conferences make a selection from the proposals received. The texts that are published in Documents undergo a second review by two members of the Scientific Committee of the journal.
