The East African Review / Les Cahiers d’Afrique de l’Est

The objective of The East African Review is to disseminate academic articles based upon field research (documents, interviews, mapping, etc.) supported by IFRA, be it individual or collective. The studies conducted addresses various topics of the human and social sciences, notably sociology, geography, history, anthropology, urbanism and political science. The East African Review covers Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, eastern Congo-DRC, Tanzania and Burundi.

The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA)

The French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) has been active in East Africa since 1977; it has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

IFRA promotes research in all the disciplines in the humanities and social sciences within East Africa. It has a strong tradition of research in geography, political science, anthropology and history. It opened up to archaeology recently.

IFRA’s main missions are:

• To increase understanding of contemporary dynamics in Eastern Africa and foster knowledge dissemination. Research undertaken leads to the publication of books, journals, reports and to the organization of conferences.

• To provide training in research to French, East African and European students by financing and/or supporting their fieldwork, helping networking between French and East African researchers and institutions, fostering integration within ongoing research projects, and giving access to publications and presentations in conferences.

• To strengthen institutional relationship between French and East African universities and research centres by supporting joint operations, agreements of international cooperation, inter-academic exchanges and mobilities at the PhD and Master levels.

IFRA works under the French ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (France’s main research body). It is part of the French Research Centers Abroad network, called IFRE.
