1Richard J. Bernstein has left us on July 4, 2022. Tributes and events celebrating his life and thought continue a year on. Dick, as he encouraged people to address him, was a most humble, gifted, and generous scholar, and his teachings illuminated the minds of many generations. His civil passion as well as his love for life pervaded his writings, within and without philosophy. His need for understanding and intellectual curiosity were never an arid self-serving exercise, but rather the expression of a thirst for community and communality. In our last exchange, dated 9 July 2021, he apologized for not being able to commit to a volume I hoped he could be part of, saying his was too much absorbed in finishing “the naturalism project” he was working on, later published as The Vicissitudes of Nature (Polity, 2022). For many of us it will be strange and sad to go on conversating without his voice and smile (often a grin) engaging and instructing us. Luckily, his legacy will keep growing the number of those (directly or indirectly) influenced and in some cases transformed by him.

2Dick gave a generous interview to EJPAP, published in 2014, in which he reflected back on his education, studies, and most recent work (https://doi.org/10.4000/ejpap.517). We are very happy to publish an interview Dick gave to Rodrigo Cárcamo Aguad on 3 December 2021, in which he mixed in his distinctive fashion philosophical and political insights about our current situation. The present issue of EJPAP is dedicated to his memory.
