A Note by the European Editors
Full text
1This special issue comes from The International Workshop on Classical Pragmatism, a conference held by the School of Philosophy, Shanxi University (China), in September 2023. It is an exception to the rules established by this journal since its foundation in 2009 about not publishing proceedings of conferences or similar events. However, the exception is motivated by the relevance of the goal: to make our readers acquainted with some of what is happening in China nowadays regarding the reception and development of pragmatism. Many scholars have been invited in recent years to Beijing, Shanghai, Shanxi, and other centers dedicated to pragmatism research. However, an entire issue devoted to studies from the Chinese cultural milieu can further clarify the state of current research and help establish another fiber in the cable between European and Chinese cultures.
2As the introduction by Xuefu Shen and Chengbing Wang says, the papers mainly show an interest in classic pragmatism and Twentieth-century neo-pragmatists. Above all, they express a will to use pragmatism as a non-reductionist scientific approach to research and the conduct of life. The liaison between this actual perspective, for which pragmatism in China enjoys an epoch of fruitful study, and Chinese traditional cultures, as well as contemporary Chinese Marxism, remains to be explored. The theme of overcoming dualisms, particularly between theory and practice, is perhaps among the most interesting to tackle in this sense, given its significant roots in Confucianism and Mao’s Marxism.
3Therefore, this issue is a starting point for a future deepening of reciprocal knowledge and collective research on classic pragmatism but also on the contemporary development of pragmatist theories and perspectives in any field of philosophy.
