This issue examines the relationship with the field in Turkey, showing how it (re)configures research and the researcher's stance in return. It addresses research currently being conducted in Turkey, which is marked by the multidimensional isolation of researchers in the field, an isolation heightened both by the political events taking place in the country during the period studied (2017-2024) and by the global COVID-19 pandemic. It reflects the reflective momentum undertaken by the members of AYAK, an acronym for Araştırmacının Yalnızlığına Karşı [“Against the Loneliness of Researchers”], a collective of young researchers formed in 2017 in Istanbul that responds to two aspirations: to conceive and disseminate research in various formats (articles, sketches, podcasts, etc.); and to move away from the hierarchies and staging practices often present in research, by taking a clear-eyed look at its “inner workings” and “behind the scenes”. The first section of this issue focuses on uncovering the behind-the-scenes questioning of theories that are both essential to the development of research work and constantly being reshaped by fieldwork. The second section documents research situations embedded in the daily lives of professionals, encouraging reflection on the investigator’s positionality in the field, while also raising ethical challenges.
