Published by the Center for Economic, Legal, and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ), which was established in 1968 in Cairo, ESMA highlights the plurality and heterogeneity of the MENA region, which encompasses many non-Arab groups and characteristics. The journal aims at improving the production of knowledge about these societies, supporting field research in sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, urban studies, history, political economy, legal studies, development studies, and others. It is published in English, French, and Arabic, with two issues per year.
