Instructions for authors

Submitting an article

The journal is only published online.
The articles must be submitted to : ethnoecologie@revues.org
They shall be in French, English or Spanish.
When submitting their articles, the authors must make sure that they match the journal’s instructions.

Articles’ sources

The selected articles can either be requests, responses to propositions or submissions by authors on their own initiative. The special issues are handled by an Associate editor who is in charge of planning and managing them with the help of other editors. He may or may not be a member of the Editorial or Scientific Boards of the journal. All articles undergo a rigorous screening from the Editorial Board, and scientific articles are then peer-assessed. At least two members of the reading board are required to check the articles.

Call for articles and requests

The associate editor of a special issue calls on experts with specific skills, and specific requests arise from the Editorial Board or from other editors assisting for the issue. They point out the topic, scope and deadlines of the article. The journal’s permanent secretariat is in charge of the follow-up and the article undergoes checking and editing procedures. Upcoming themes and call for articles are posted on the journal’s website and regularly emailed to a list of potential collaborators.

Unsolicited articles

Unsolicited articles are collected by the journal’s editorial board. They go through the same screening process than those submitted within the framework of a special issue.
Articles selection process:
When receiving articles, the members of the journal’s Editorial Board or other editors working on a special issue make a first selection on the basis of how relevant they are to the goal of the journal and later submit them to peer-assessment.
Peer-assessment:
All articles, except ‘editorial contents’, are submitted to a pee-assessment.
The review report is sent to the Chief Editor. His decision to publish or not is final.

Criteria

About the content: scientific value, i.e. whether the article offers a relevant theoretical framework, methodological quality of articles based on research results, match with the journal’s themes ;
About the style: illustration quality, bibliographical quality (all references must appear in the bibliography and those references must also appear in the main body of the article) for purposes of clarity ; correct language.

Procedures

When receiving a full article, a member of the editorial board, who may be the associate editor of the issue or the editor in chief, reads it to decide whether it is acceptable. An acknowledgement of receipt is sent to the author in order to inform him of the good reception of the article and whether it is accepted or not. When refused, the internal reviewer may suggest changes before another submission of the article. When accepted, the article undergoes screening from two scientific reviewers. In case of discordance among the two reviewers, the article shall be submitted to a third one. If this third reviewer is not available, the members of the board will make the final call.

When receiving reviewers’ recommendations, the editor in chief takes one of the following decisions: publishing the article, publishing the article after minor corrections, publishing the article after major corrections, rejecting the article. An email is sent to the author informing him of whether his article was accepted or rejected. A letter from the editor in chief shall give the authors an explanation of the decision that was made.

The authors are granted a certain period of time (depending on the article) to make the necessary adjustments.

The new version is then sent to the editor in charge of the article who shall review it for the second time. The authors may then be invited to make new corrections. If the corrections are not made, the editorial board has the right not to publish the article in question.

Originality of contents

Only authors are in charge of the originality of the article.

Reproduction of extracts from published work is possible, provided that the source is acknowledged by the author and that they were granted explicit permission from the copyright owner.

Advice to authors

Texts format

The texts should be emailed. Paper copies are not accepted. Please avoid any kind of layout – it only makes it more complicated for us. The page format or tabulation should be the same for the whole text. Styles (automatic spaces, pre-formatting) must not be used.

It will never exceed 15 000 words.

A few tips concerning the formatting

  • Headings and subheadings should never be numbered.

  • The various levels of headings should be clearly identified as such : bold, italics, different bodies. The heading must never be in capital letters or underlined.

  • In French, capital letters must be accented É, È, À, etc.

  • Do not underline anything.

  • Acronyms should be written in capital letters without dots between the letters : CNRS, etc. When an acronym is used as a word (which can be read phonetically) and when it is commonly known, only the first letter should be a capital letter : Unesco.

  • All acronyms must be written entirely when they first appear in the text.

  • Short quotes are inserted between quotation marks within the text. Quotes amounting to more than 5 lines should be detached from the text in a separate paragraph, between quotation marks, with a left indent, and a space before and after. Left out sections should be indicated with ellipses between square brackets.

  • References to footnotes should appear in the text in sequential numbers ; footnotes should appear at the bottom of the page in question. Footnotes must be used for additional information on the content of the sentence, and not to refer to an article or a report.

Manuscripts must include:

  • A meaningful title in French, in English or in Spanish.

  • The complete contact details of the author(s) (name, first name, subject and/or function, professional affiliation ; complete mailing address, phone number, fax number, email address). If the submitted manuscript is signed by several authors, it is understood that the author submitting the text has been granted authorization from all other authors to submit it in their names.

  • An abstract in French and an abstract in English or Spanish.

  • A list of key-words identifying the content of the article. If the abstract is written in another language than French, it must come with a list of appropriated key-words.

  • A bibliographical section gathering all the references used in the text.

References

References must be mentioned in the body of the text: please write down the name of the author and the publication year (ex. : Bahuchet 2002). If you wish to refer to an article which has two authors, write down both names and the publication year (Bahuchet & Betsch 2007). For collective works including more than two authors, write down the name of the first author followed by “et al.” and the publication year (Bahuchet et al. 2006). When several references are used for the same piece of information, they should appear in chronological order (Bahuchet & Betsch 2007 ; Dumez 2002). In the end of the text, please gather all the references of quoted publications (bibliographical section), according to the following standards.

Name of the author, initials of the first name, name of the other authors (for all authors), initials of the first names of the other authors, publication year, title of the publication, place of publication, publisher, number of pages or precise page of where the quotation comes from.

Figures and tables

Figures and tables should appear at the end of the text on separate pages. They should be numbered in Arabic numerals and should be accompanied by a short caption in French and in English. All illustrations must be referred to in the text (Table, Figure). A list of the illustrations with the captions will be placed at the end of the text. If the tables and figures have been designed through a software other than that of the text, charts and figures should also be sent separately, preferably in .png format, or in .jpg format.

The insertion location should be indicated in the body of the text.

Please note that all illustrations must be in a resolution of 300 dpi in order to allow direct reproduction. No alteration will be made by the publisher. The illustrations are published in colors. Nevertheless, please consider that the readers will print the article in black and white. When the topic demands it, it is preferable that the text be illustrated by photographs (sent preferably in .png format or .jpg).

It is the author’s responsibility to request authorization from the publisher and all concerned authors to reproduce any illustration (picture, figure or table) which has already been published. The source must be mentioned.
