Texte intégral

It has been over a quarter of a century since the first edition of Fintan Vallely’s monumental The Companion to Irish Traditional Music appeared, in 1999, immediately establishing itself as an essential reference for anyone seriously engaged with Irish musical heritage. Now in its third edition, this significantly expanded volume continues to reflect and document the evolving landscape of Irish traditional music with impressive depth and scholarship.

The 2024 edition notably expands upon the previous iterations by featuring approximately 600,000 words covering nearly 2,000 entries, ensuring an even richer exploration of the tradition. Vallely and his editorial team, fully aware of the dynamic nature of their subject matter, have extended the scope to include detailed analyses of trends identified through competition results from All-Ireland Fleadhanna Cheoil spanning more than seven decades (1951-2023). This novel inclusion offers valuable insights into shifting national, regional, gender, and instrumental patterns, enhancing our understanding of the evolving performance practices and cultural reception of traditional Irish music.

Indeed, the attention to gender balance constitutes a particularly commendable addition to this edition. Building on ongoing discourses exemplified by movements such as FairPlé and the #MisaFosta initiative, this volume appropriately acknowledges the crucial role played by women within the tradition, addressing not only representation but also sensitive issues like harassment and equality. This clearly aligns with broader contemporary conversations regarding diversity and inclusion, reinforcing The Companion’s position as a culturally responsive and socially aware resource.

Another significant improvement lies in its expanded international and regional coverage. The third edition thoughtfully extends its gaze beyond the shores of Ireland, examining Irish musical traditions and their influences in locations such as Chicago, Glasgow, Canada, Australia, and France (although the information here has not been updated and is unfortunately obsolete). Such an international perspective reinforces the inherently diasporic and fluid nature of Irish music, thus providing a more comprehensive picture of its global footprint. Concurrently, individual Irish counties receive deeper attention, further highlighting the internal diversity and regional specificities of traditional music practices within Ireland itself.

Accompanying this vast textual corpus, Vallely continues to embrace multimedia integration, pioneered through earlier initiatives such as the Compánach CD project – originally conceived as a live multimedia concert featuring projections, commentary, and performances – and the related Turas audio-visual concert series on DVD, designed to explore the history and cultural contexts of Irish traditional music. This multimedia strategy is extended here with a companion digital-download album, also available as a CD or DVD, offering performances of numerous tunes transcribed in the text by notable contemporary musicians (Gerry O’Connor, Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn, Sibéal Davitt, and Fintan Vallely himself). This innovative feature vividly demonstrates the sonic essence of the tradition and significantly enriches reader engagement by connecting the written word directly to its musical roots.

Inevitably, such extensive expansion and restructuring necessitated editorial decisions regarding inclusion and omission. Beyond the absence of updates on entries such as Irish music in France, mentioned above, the omission or reduction of previously extensive indexes and sections on folk traditions abroad, justified by the editors on the grounds that dedicated publications now cover these topics more extensively, might leave some readers feeling a (reasonable) sense of loss. However, this editorial strategy undoubtedly sharpens The Companion’s focus on its core subject, Irish traditional music, and helps prevent the volume from becoming unwieldy.

Overall, the third edition of The Companion to Irish Traditional Music, meticulously edited by Vallely, once again stands out as an authoritative, indispensable resource for scholars, musicians, and general readers alike. It masterfully balances thorough historical documentation with contemporary analysis, effectively capturing the richness, diversity, and ongoing transformations within traditional Irish music. While no single volume can exhaustively address every dimension of such a vast field, Vallely’s Companion continues to set an exceptionally high standard for scholarly resources on Irish musical traditions.
