About the journal

Football(s). Histoire, culture, économie, société is a print and digital journal of humanities and social sciences published twice a year. Produced by the Centre Lucien Febvre (UR2273) at Marie and Louis Pasteur University, the journal was distributed in digital format on PREO when it was created in 2022. It then migrated to OpenEdition Journals in 2025. Football(s) is published with the support of the Open Publishing Division of the MSH in Dijon (CNRS, UBE). It brings together historians, anthropologists, economists, geographers, sociologists and literary scholars. The approach is multidisciplinary, focusing on the past and present of different forms of football (football, rugby, Gaelic football, etc.). It aims to report on the latest research devoted to these games. Although published in an academic setting, the journal also targets an informed audience through its attractive layout and concise, accessible articles.

Each issue begins with an editorial and then offers a thematic dossier (approximately 8 articles of 30,000 characters), followed by several sections :

  • Researchers wearing studs: presentation of recent research in archives or in the field (30,000 characters per article)

  • Offside: a news article (30,000 characters)

  • Key witnesses: interview with a former player, manager or journalist (30,000 characters)

  • Archives: football history collection (20,000 characters)

  • Football heritage: column on monuments or art (20,000 characters)

  • Football objects: column dedicated to balls, boots, shirts, cleats (15,000 characters)

  • Football media library: reviews of books, films and music related to football (30,000 to 50,000 characters in total)

  • Football classics: review of a work that has had a significant impact on football literature (8,000 characters)

  • Correspondence from abroad: cultural column by correspondents abroad (30,000 to 40,000 characters)

With its wide range of approaches and open-mindedness, Football(s) aims to reach an audience that includes both academics and well-informed fans.
