After 1994, the United States will host the FIFA World Cup for the second time in 2026. For football, the country has long been a mission field, as ‘American’ sports such as baseball, American football and basketball dominate the sporting landscape. Nevertheless, a genuine football culture exists, driven by immigrants and women, with professional leagues of varying fortunes and national teams that have participated in both the men's and women's World Cups since their inception. While football is part of the capitalist system of American sport, it may also hold political ideals that are radically opposed to MAGA America.

Editor’s notes
