Submission guidelines

Articles in Géographie et cultures are published simultaneously in paper edition by Éditions L'Harmattan and online on this platform.

Articles (for both thematic issues and varias) are submitted in electronic format (.doc), in Times New Roman, 11, without line spacing, and without special formatting. Capital letters are accentuated. Articles should be addressed to the editorial board (gc@openedition.org).

The number of characters (including abstracts and bibliographical references) must be between 35,000 and 50,000 characters maximum. Each illustration counts for 1,500 characters.

Articles must clearly position themselves within the field of cultural geography and justify this positioning.

Articles must be original and may not, at the time of submission, be under review in another journal.

Articles must not contain elements that could identify the author: these elements (institutions of affiliation, e-mail address) are indicated in the message accompanying the article.

Illustrations are inserted in the text. Original illustrations will be supplied when the article is definitively accepted.

Failure to comply with these instructions will result in automatic rejection of the article.

Standards for articles

The title should be short and attractive if possible (no footnotes in the title; a short subtitle may be used if necessary).

Feel free to use intertitles with up to 3 levels.

Use footnotes sparingly (10 maximum).

Summaries in French and English (10-20 lines), 5-10 keywords in French and English, and the title in English are essential. Additional abstracts and keywords in Spanish or Portuguese are welcome.

Bibliographical references should be cited in the text (Dupont, 2006; Durand, 2004, p. xx). They will be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the manuscript. They will be presented in lower case according to the following standards:

Book: NAME First name (in full), year, title of work, place, publisher, number of pages (xx p.).

Chapter in a collective work: NAME First Name, year, “Title of chapter”, in First Name Last Name, Title of work, place, publisher, pages (p. x-xx).

Article: NAME First name, year, “Article title”, Name of journal, volume (vol.), number (n° ), pages (p. x-xx).

It is possible to use Zotero by exporting the bibliography in the “Geography and Cultures” style.

Authors may, if they wish, adopt inclusive writing: the format accepted by the journal is that of epicene words (gender-neutral words, e.g. “the student public”) and double flexion (consisting of declining groups of people in both the feminine and masculine genders). Any other inclusive writing format (e.g. the mid-point) will not be used, as it complicates text editing and reading for the visually impaired.

Illustrations

Initially published in paper format, maps and figures must be designed to be legible on a page 12 cm wide (and 17 cm high) and supplied in black and white with legends in a “calibri” type font, font 8 minimum. It is possible to supply a second color version to be used for online publishing.

Tables are expected in Word format in the text, not as image files.

Illustration source files must be sent in a separate folder, in their original format and size (ai, gif, jpeg or png formats), avoiding compressed files.

The minimum image resolution is 800 pixels for the largest side, with a minimum resolution of 150 dpi.

Illustration file names should be self-explanatory (author's name fig1.gif, author's name fig2.jpg,...) and refer to the illustration titles mentioned in the text.

The caption for each illustration should include a title (figure 1 - ...) - possibly a commentary - and the source.

Very important: the author must ensure that the images used are free of copyright or that he/she owns the rights to them.

Book reviews

They are sent to the editorial board (gc@openedition.org).

In addition to a text of 4,000 to 6,000 characters in Word format (without footnotes), they must include the following information: author's first and last name, contact details, e-mail address, bibliographic record of the work, film or event, and a short title.
