Since the 1980’s cultural geography has constantly asserted itself as a place of experimentation, both thematically and methodologically, helping to broaden the horizons of the discipline and renew its debates, notably through the recognition of the legitimacy of new or unexpected subjects or approaches. The diversity of the authors’ epistemologies, methodologies and theoretical projects has created an open, plural scientific space, attentive to new, singular or off-the-beaten-track objects of study. In trying to go beyond the tension between structure and agency, Géographie et cultures, created in 1992 by Paul Claval, has made a major contribution to these developments. The journal has been instrumental in stimulating scientific debates in contemporary geography and building bridges with other social sciences and foreign academic circles (British, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Canada, etc.).

In charge of the journal since January 2020, the current editorial board has impulsed a scientific project that stressed the necessity to study the spatial dimension of culture and cultural practices along with the structuring character of social and economic factors in the analysis of observed situations. Over the past two decades, social science research has led to the recognition of agents’ competencies, opening the way to micro-situated analyses, while at the same time making it possible to think about the relationship between the individual and the collective. According to this scientific project, these skills, theorized in particular on the basis of the idea of practice, must be considered in relation to the social relationships in which agents are caught up. Knowledge and know-how, actions and their symbolic imagery are socially and spatially inscribed, and we pose that geographers need to take this into account when analyzing the cultural dimension of societies.

Editorial Board

The editorial board manages the journal and takes all important decisions. It meets at minimum four times a year. Its composition is gender-balanced and respects generational and geographical equilibrium. The editorial board is open to professors, researchers and teachers. Its members are co-opted by the editorial board on the basis of their scientific expertise, in order to cover the field of cultural geography as broadly as possible. Members of the Editorial Board are appointed for a renewable three-year term.

The editorial board is in charge of:

• Electing the editor-in-chief

• Defining the editorial policy of the journal

• Defining the scientific policy of the journal

• Designing new members of the committees (direction, editorial board, scientific committee)

• Adopting the rules of procedure and agreements

• Selecting the special issues to be published

• Contributing to the visibility of the journal

• Supervising the peer-review process

All articles are evaluated by a member of the Editorial Board and by an external reader. In the case of special issues, the guest editor of the theme issue also evaluates the article. Consequently, the Editorial Board deals with all political, administrative, editorial and scientific matters concerning the journal. It may invite the coordinators of special issues to attend reunions or parts of reunions dedicated to these issues.

Scientific Committee

The members of the Scientific Committee are appointed by the Editorial Board on the recommendation of its members. They are chosen on the basis of their scientific expertise. Their term of office is 6 years, renewable.

The Scientific Committee has four main functions:

• Approval of the scientific and editorial policy laid down by the Editorial Board

• To act as a scientific guarantor

• To make thematic proposals

• Promoting the journal
