Texte intégral

Challenging issues and innovative approaches to improve environmental quality of European Continental hydrosystems have been recently highlighted within a book edited by Gilles Arnaud-Fassetta, Eric Masson and Emmanuel Reynard and published by Friedrich Pfeil Verlag in München. This collective work is based on contributions from 77 authors who participated in the conference on “Continental hydrosystems and European territories facing different water laws”, which was held in Sion (Valais, Switzerland) in July 2011 under the auspices of the French National Committee of Geography (the Continental Hydrosystems Commission) and the Institute of Geography of the University of Lausanne.

This international contribution involving authors from France, Switzerland, Romania, Portugal, USA and Japan is also interdisciplinary, integrative and bridges the gap between academics and practitioners. The book is organised into 4 main topics. In section 1, contributions focus on river basin management. In section 2, contributors highlight questions dealing with integrated approaches for managing risks. Section 3 assembles contributions on actors and public participation, whereas section 4 is focused on the fundamental understanding of hydrosystem functioning to provide recommendations for managing hydrosystems.

The book highlights a large range of innovative approaches for implementing successfully the water framework directive, and opens up debates and reflections on hydrological questions (baseflow, karstic resource, water use, aquifer characteristics), fluvial geomorphology (sediment transfer, bed erosion, channel and landscape evolution, geomorphic and ecological effects of infrastructures), chemistry (water pollutants, sewage management), social stakes, potential conflicts and policy for designing the future of rivers (e.g., ecology improvement versus flood risk management, cultural versus natural heritage).

The scientific approaches cover a large range of geographical and management contexts allowing reconciling environmental sciences with actors involved in water issues. It is an original contribution that will undoubtedly be very useful to practitioners in charge of managing rivers in a sustainable perspective, involving all water actors, promoting debate and providing necessary feedback on various experiences. It will also be very useful to students and academics involved in this new research domain where production of knowledge focused on fluvial socio-ecosystem evolution is challenging both in terms of understanding human-environment interactions and integrating natural processes (biological, hydromorphological or chemical) and social stakes. The book will also provide keys for sustainable development of continental hydrosystems.
