Statistics of the New World, New Fields in the History of Statistics
196 pages
ISBN 978-2-7132-2753-0

The history of statistics has unfolded along multiple lines in recent years. The contributions presented here show how statistical knowledge was mobilized for very different purposes – development of the welfare state, promotion of the medical profession, population control, building of a bureaucracy – in various countries (Mexico, Argentina, French West Indies, Hungary, France, Greece) between the end of the eighteenth century and the immediate aftermath of World War II. A review of the abundant research on the history of statistics in Latin America is also proposed.
