Abstracts

To reply to the query: are the taboo or ritual sites of the Kanaks sacred? I question the very notion of sacredness among the Paicî. Based on fieldwork carried out in the Ponérihouen and Poindimié Regions (Paicî and Cèmuchî areas), I attempt to present a typology of the different taboo sites in relation with their representations of nature and supernature. This makes it possible to highlight the importance of their links to their ancestors and spirits of all kinds in managing and representing nature, which greatly differ from theWest.
