Preamble

The DreAM-CollEX project team

Texte intégral

1DreAM (“Dreist ar mor - Dros y môr. Outre-Manche - Across the Channel. Archives bretonnes, archives galloises : une analyse croisée et spéculaire”) is a CollEX-Persée project run by the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) at the University of Wales and the Centre de recherche bretonne et celtique (CRBC) at the Université de Bretagne occidentale.

2In collaboration with various conservation institutions, the project aimed to identify, digitise and exploit Breton archives in Wales and Welsh archives held in Brittany, and to link them together. The National Library of Wales (NLW) has a large collection of Breton archives, including literary, historical and political archives, as well as theatre manuscripts in Breton. These archives are echoed in French libraries and archive centres (scattered collections or archive holdings), which also hold archives of Welsh personalities, in English and Welsh, thanks to exchanges and correspondence with Breton personalities. There is therefore a complementarity of holdings on both sides of the Channel, which certainly merited investigation.

3This project provided an opportunity for Breton researchers to visit Aberystwyth and for Welsh researchers to come to Brest. These fruitful exchanges led to study days in Brest on 7 and 8 February 2024 and in Aberystwyth on 21 June of the same year. The papers have been grouped together and are the subject of this volume, the first stage in this long-term research project.

4What initial conclusions can be drawn? The papers gathered here show that knowledge of the collections on both sides of the Channel has been greatly improved and that there are excellent prospects for future research. One of the aims of the project was to raise awareness of theatre manuscripts, particularly those in the NLW, and to link them with other manuscripts held in the BnF (National Library of France), the Archives départementales du Finistère (ADF) and the Bibliothèque bretonne de Landévennec. A budget line had been allocated to finance this digitisation. Unfortunately, whilst full access was given to the physical items at the National Library of Wales, due to complex issues relating to ownership and rights, the digitisation and publication of 18th and 19th century theatre manuscripts was not possible. This is highly regrettable as it deprives Bretons and researchers of easy access to a largely unknown part of Breton-language literature. The money initially allocated to the NLW has therefore been allocated to the BnF and the Bibliothèque bretonne de Landévennec. Fortunately, other valuable documents from the NLW have been digitised and illustrate some of the contributions in this volume.

5At the end of this first stage, we would like to thank the staff of the NLW, who gave us such a warm welcome, the staff of the BnF, the Glamorgan Archives, the Cardiff Central Library and the ADF, as well as the Abbé and Mme Berthou-Bray, from Landévennec Abbey. We would also like to thank the CAWCS and CRBC teams. Without this support, research worthy of the name cannot be carried out.
