The Making of a Myth : Maximiano José Roberto and the Legend of Yuruparí
Emilio Frignati
p. 91-120

Abstracts

This paper proposes a new approach to the literary genesis of the legend of Yuruparí, a lengthy narrative from the northwestern Amazon. The legend, published at the end of the xixth century, has been the subject of widely diverse and contradictory interpretations due to its style and complexity. I insist on the crucial role played in this process by Maximiano José Roberto, descendant of a prestigious Tariana lineage and collaborator with the intellectual elite of Manaus (Brazil), whose name was omitted at the time of publication. The reconstruction of the biography of this mixed-heritage scholar and the examination of his collaboration with Brazilian botanist João Barbosa Rodrigues and the Italian count Ermanno Stradelli shed light on the process of fabrication of the Legend. An analysis based on a corpus of contemporary and subsequent myths shows that the composition of this narrative has an important intertextual dimension. It is based on the transcription and rewriting of oral versions of myths collected from various ritual specialists who belonged to different ethnic groups of the Vaupés, Rio Negro and Rio Branco. Far from being a literary invention with romantic overtones or an ancient sacred text, as Claude Lévi-Strauss assumed, this work condenses several pre-existing texts into a single and coherent narrative. The study of the narrative transformations leading from myths to legend shows that such a project was attended by an attempt to politically redefine indigenous collective identities in the late xixth century colonial context.

First lines
