Second Language Training Facing Emergency
Edited by Junkai Li and Aurora Fragonara

This issue explores the challenges which confront second language teaching, as well as the opportunities arising in contexts of crisis and emergency such as migrations or pandemics. The authors tackle a variety of themes, including the language training of Haitian learners fleeing to the Dominican Republic, the teaching of English as a second language to Ukrainian refugees, and the integration of new students at Swiss universities. The contributors discuss how language teachers deal with these new emergency situations, and how they adapt their methods to meet the specific needs of learners in such conditions. The authors underline the importance of rethinking second language teaching methods to adapt to the demands of these diverse audiences, highlighting in particular learners’ autonomy, and the integration of digital technology into existing pedagogical practices. The papers gathered herein offer a variety of perspectives on how second language training can contribute to the integration, self-empowerment and reconstruction of identities in such urgent circumstances.
