Mandenkan is the only academic journal on the Mande language family that counts about 70 languages spoken in West Africa. It covers all the fields of the Mande linguistics; publications on the contact phenomena between Mande and other language families are also accepted.

Mandenkan was founded in 1981 by Gérard Dumestreas a biannual international journal. From 2002 through 2012, Mandenkan was co-edited by Gérard Dumestre and Valentin Vydrin; since 2012, it is edited by Valentin Vydrin. The publication of Mandenkan is financially supported by LLACAN (CNRS UMR-8135) and INALCO. Hard copies of Mandenkan are sent free of charge to the research centers and universities where research in the field is carried out; an electronic version is available on the platform and on the site of LLACAN.

The Editorial Board is composed of specialists in Mande languages from different countries and continents.

Papers can be submitted in English or French, the two working languages of Mandenkan. Each submission passes a reading by the editor followed by two anonymous reviewings by experts in the field; the experts can be either members of the Editorial Board or external. Experts’ comments are passed to the authors so that they might be taken into account in the updating of the paper.
