Instructions for authors – submitting, peer-review and publishing

Aims and Policy

Medievalista was founded in 2005 as the electronic journal of the Instituto de Estudos Medievais at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. It publishes original research in the form of articles, congress papers, letters to the Editor, book reviews, Master and PhD theses’ summaries and state-of-the-art surveys on Medieval Studies. Medievalista accepts manuscripts from all disciplines, covering a broad subject range, provided that they concern the Middle Ages.

All articles and other contributions accepted for publication will be made freely available on the world wide web and as downloadable .pdf papers.

Article submission and copyright

Article proposals should be sent to the editors at medievalista@fcsh.unl.pt. It is the responsibility of the editors and the editorial board directly to review non-article contributions. Manuscripts will first go through the editors of Medievalista for an assessment of their thematic scope and choice of referees as appropriate. Manuscripts falling outside the journal’s editorial objectives may be excluded for this reason. Accepted articles will be assigned two specialist reviewers for anonymous review.

Non-article submissions will be reviewed by the editors and the editorial board so as to ensure that all editorial and publication criteria are met. Medievalista may occasionally dispense with peer-review and publish pieces considered to be of outstanding interest for Medieval Studies.

The editors will strive to inform authors as early as possible of the decision to accept submitted articles. However, due to the refereeing system, notifications of acceptance, conditional acceptance, and others may take up to twelve months.

The editors will consider every submission as original unpublished work (any other circumstances should be noted by authors by email) and expect that articles under review will not be submitted for review elsewhere simultaneously. Authors agree that the rights of publication and reproduction belong to Medievalista, which also reserves the right to make contributions available through its electronic URL (Uniform Resource Locator) in .htm/.html and .pdf formats, as well as through open access directories and platforms.

Authors must obtain permission for the reproduction of illustrations and other copyrighted material.

Publishing with Medievalista implies acceptance of the rules presented herein.

Peer review

Article proposals to Medievalista undergo double-blind peer review, and it belongs to the editors to seek reviewers according to the theme and the language of articles, for which they may seek guidance from the advisory board.

Reviewers are chosen by the editors in accordance to the theme and language of manuscripts. Members of the editorial board likewise may be called upon as reviewers.

On their express acceptance, chosen reviewers are sent the article assigned to them, stripped of any references to authorship, and an assessment form. Reviewers are expected to return manuscripts to the editors along with an assessment form or report within three months upon reception. If both reviewers agree to publication as it stands, the author(s) will receive the anonymous reports of both with an estimated publication date.

In the event that revisions are required, authors will receive the anonymous reports from both reviewers with such an indication and a prescribed deadline. Revised manuscripts will be further reviewed by the editors for a final assessment and to validate publication. The editors may opt for the re-submission of manuscripts to reviewers. In the event that the two reviewers are not in agreement concerning publication, the editors may either take such a decision unto themselves or they may seek the opinion of a further reviewer. Should both reviewers inadvise publication, they are still required to provide authors with a complete, anonymous assessment. In the unlikely event that the wording of the reviewers’ assessment is judged to cause offense to the author, the editors will either request that the assessment be re-submitted, or they will garner the information considered to be the most useful. Regardless of particular outcomes, authors will at all times be informed once their manuscript has reached the end of the peer review process.
