However, Johannes Thomann (1996), “Avicenna und die physiognomische Methode,” 63, also points to the fact that Avicenna gives advice related to physiognomy at the very end of his later Pointers. Yet it rather looks like Avicenna uses the verb istafrasa (10th form of the verb farasa) at Pointers, vol. iv, p.163, which Thomann refers to, in a general sense, as ‘to investigate’ without a mandatory connection to physiognomics. (Thomann, however, has alerted me to the fact that Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī understands this in his commentary in the literal sense as related to physiognomics, Pointers, vol. iv, p. 162.) I therefore wouldn’t completely agree with Anna Akasoy (2008), “Arabic Physiognomy,” p. 137, who understands Avicenna also as taking the established status of physiognomics for granted in contrast to Aristotle. For Avicenna always reproduces these conditionals that, even if denoting real rather than hypothetical conditions, might be interpreted as expressing doubt, or at least precaution. Also, most occurrences of physiognomy as a science are indeed found in his earlier works.

He connects here the form of the syllogism with analogy (tamthīl), but its matter with (demonstrative) signs (dalīl wa-ʿalāma). An example might be Avicenna’s Aristotelian statement in his Animals, p. 64, that “all blooded walking animals sleep and wake,” which is stated as a fact, though an inductive reasoning might be lying at its base. Nonetheless, even though the Animals would be a place to look for induction or analogy having been employed, the inclusion of this science is limited to the Healing.
