Presentation and submission guidelines

Presentation of the journal

New World, New Worlds is a journal devoted to the Americas in the fields of history and social sciences. It favours comparative perspectives and covers all periods. Subjects discussed by the journal range from the links between mestizo studies (social and cultural) and globalization since the early modern era; colonial/modern history; migration; political history and the role of the State; the history of representations and sensibilities; cultural transfers and the circulation of knowledge and the anthropology of contemporary societies. The journal is supported by the National Institute for Human and Social Sciences of the CNRS. It was first published by the Centre de recherche sur les mondes américains and is now supported by the French research unit Mondes américains (UMR 8168 – CNRS/EHESS).

The journal welcomes original articles by scholarly specialists of the Americas. The publication of New World, New Worlds is frequently updated – four times a year – and can therefore follow scientific production in this field in real time, thanks to its reviews and historiographic essays section. It is also possible to visit and subscribe to its Facebook and Twitter.

It also hosts a wealth of material useful to the constitution of a scientific heritage devoted to the study of the Americas and forms part of the “digital humanities” field. Contributions are published in four languages: Spanish, French, Portuguese and English.

Presentation of each section

In order to fully take advantage of online edition possibilities, each of these rubrics can include all sorts of media content (images, videos, sound recording).

Debates

This section hosts unpublished scientific texts on Latin American history and social sciences from the 15th to 19th centuries. Articles about the Americas written from a transversal perspective are also welcome.

Present issues

This section also hosts unpublished scientific texts on history and social sciences on Latin America and the Iberian world in the 20th to 21st centuries. The works in this section tackle contemporary issues and may thus include anthropological and sociological analyses.

Dissertations excerpts

This section is meant for doctors wanting to publish an extract from a thesis or doctoral dissertation. It aims to promote the work of young researchers whose chosen subjects correspond to the journal’s areas of interest. These extracts may be published in two languages with abstracts and key-words in both languages.

Conference documents

The “Colloques” section is open to organizers of all scientific events, study days, national or international conferences, symposia and workshops. It hosts conference proceedings and documents may as well include videos of the presentations and debates.

Starting in 2016, conference documents are composed of maximum 8 texts (introduction and 7 articles).

Reviews and historiographic articles

This section is updated on a regular basis and features reviews of books published in the last four years as well as historiographic articles on a given theme, based on one or more recent works. Publication proposals must be submitted to the following email addresses: revuenuevomundo@gmail.com et lecturasnuevomundo@gmail.com.

Images, memories and sounds

This section is devoted to works dedicated to visual history or including visual or sound material. As part of Digital Humanities, we will here include interviews with researchers, cinematographic reviews (grounded upon historical or sociological points of view) and virtual exhibitions based on unpublished research works.

Guide for the Americanist researcher

Guide for the Americanist researcher is a highly practical section consisting in guides to archives and libraries of interest to researchers working on the Americas or Iberian world. It will also feature useful information about living in certain cities. Commented indexes from major historical archives on the Americas and thematic repositories are also to be found in this section.

Previously unpublished materials (except extracts from recently published books, granted they have received publisher’s authorization) will be submitted to the editorial board. Each article will be subjected to at least two peer reviews by specialists of the relevant field. Peer reviewers may suggest to accept the article, request for the text to be modified, or refuse its publication. If changes are requested, the article will be submitted to the reviewers for a second evaluation.

Reviews and essays may include footnotes and references.

It is required not to use bibliography programs (EndNote, Zotero, etc.), nor to put footnotes in titles or subtitles. Biographical references of the author of the review should appear on a separate line.

For text, citations, notes and references, the editorial guidelines of the journal should be followed.

Proposing a Special Issue

In order to evaluate the interest of publishing a special issue, the editorial board requires a short presentation of the theme proposed (1 or 2 pages maximum) which clearly states the main lines of analysis. The coordinators must in addition provide a list of the authors’ names and institutions, as well as the title and resume of the articles proposed. The special issue’ overview will be shared with the individual articles’ peer reviewers. The authors’ names should therefore not be mentioned in the overview, in order to preserve the anonymity of the evaluation.

Submissions which do not respect these norms will not be accepted by the journal.
