  • Fortunato Iozzelli, « La parabole du bon Samaritain (Luc 10, 25-37) chez Pierre de Jean Olivi », p. 87-111. The article illustrates Olivi’s exegetical method by analyzing his exposition of the parable of the Good Samaritan in Lectura super Lucam.

This article suggests an interpretation for Olivi’s concept of nobilitas.

  • Catherine König-Pralong, « Olivi et le formalisme ontologique. Lectures d’Aristote, d’Averroès et critique d’Albert ? », p. 135-168. This article analyzes medieval views concerning Aristotle's argument (in Metaphysics Z) that the human body does not enter the definition of man. It is suggested that one of the unnamed « Averroists » against whom Olivi argues is Albertus Magnus.

Duba analyzes Olivi's conception of instantaneous action as it appears in question 26 and 42 of Summa. He points out that Olivi’s discussion of what is nowadays known as 'synchronic contingency' is a special case of instantaneous action. The idea that action takes place in an instant plays a central role not only in Olivi’s theory of the freedom of the will, but also in his theories of cognition and time.

  • Olivier Ribordy, « Materia spiritualis. A detailed analysis of the  concept of spiritual matter as it appears in Summa quaestionum super Sententias,qq. 16-20.

Petagine contextualizes Olivi’s discussion concerning the nature of matter by discussing the positions of Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, and Siger of Brabant.

This article traces the reception of Olivi’s though by comparing certain of his philosophical positions (especially from the domain of anthropology) to those of Francis of Marchia.

Libertà e soggettività in Pietro di Giovanni Olivi », p. 355-368. Nickl analyzes Olivi’s conception of freedom and its relation to subjectivity.

  • Massimiliano Lenzi, « Bruno Nardi, Pietro di Giovanni Olivi e l'origine dell’anima humana in Dante (Pg XXV 37-79) », p. 369-405. Lenzi traces the institutional and intellectual reasons for Nardi’s original view that Dante’s conception of the origin of the soul comes from Olivi.

Articles

28Han Thomas Adriaenssen, « Peter John Olivi on Perceptual Representation », Vivarium, 49, 2011,  p. 324-352. This paper argues that Olivi defends an internalist theory of cognition, according to which the cognitive acts represent their objects in virtue of being similitudes thereof. Yet, being a similitude does not necessarily entail any similarity between the object and the act.

Gowler, Oxford, OUP, 2012, p. 35-49. This article deals with Olivi's interpretation of the way of life of the early Christian community, as depicted in the Acts of the Apostles. He argues that the community held neither private nor common property.

48Holly Grieco, « The Boy Bishop and the “Uncanonized Saint” St. Louis of Anjou and Peter of John Olivi as Models of Franciscan Spirituality in the Fourteenth Century », Franciscan Studies, 70, 2012, p. 247-292, compare les deux figures de Louis d’Anjou and Pierre de Jean Olivi comme deux modèles de sainteté franciscaine, à l’aide d’une bibliographie qui n’est pas tout à fait à jour.

Holopainen & M. Tuominen, Leiden, Brill, 2006, p. 171–188. This article contains a short analysis of Olivi's explanation for the fact that mentally disordered people cannot have free acts of the will, which he presents in Summa II, q. 59. Olivi treats madness mainly as a natural phenomenon, although he thinks that it may also be caused by separate spirits.

52Sharon Kaye, « Why the Liberty of Indifference Is Worth Wanting: Buridan's Ass, Friendship, and Peter John Olivi », History of Philosophy Quarterly, 21, 2004, p. 21–42. Kaye argues that Olivi is the first philosopher to appeal to the kind of thought experiment, which is commonly known as Buridan’s ass, in his discussion concerning the freedom of the will. She also discusses Olivi’s conception of friendship and its relation to freedom.

54Frank Lane, « Freedom and Authority : The Law, Peter Olivi, and the Second Vatican Council », Franciscan Studies, 62, 2004, p. 155-176. Lane places Olivi's conception of the evangelical vow as a relation between God and individual human being (rather than as a relation between an individual and the Church or religious order) into a larger context of medieval discussions of the nature of a vow, and the authority of the Church and individual freedom.

Essays on the Internal Senses and the Mind/Body Problem from Avicenna to the Medical Enlightenment, ed. H. Lagerlund, Dordrecht, Springer, 2007, p. 93–108. The article compares Olivi's and Aquinas’ views on the KK-thesis (according to which if a knows that p, then a knows that a knows that p). In effect, it analyses the theories of self-knowledge of these two authors.

64Ana María Mora-Márquez, « Pragmatics in Peter John Olivi’s Account of Signification of Common Names », Vivarium, 49, 2011, p. 150-64. This article deals with Olivi's theory of the signification of common names, as it appears in Questiones logicales and Quid ponat ius. The central argument is that Olivi includes a pragmatic element to the signification: the intention of the speaker, the intention of the listener, the conventions of the linguistic community, and the actual context of communication are features which account for the semantical content of an utterance.

86Juhana Toivanen, « Peter Olivi on Internal Senses », British Journal for the History of Philosophy 15, 2007, p. 427–454. This article deals with Olivi's theory of the internal senses. It shows that Olivi rejected a pluralistic view according to which there are several distinct internal senses and proposes a detailed theory in which the only internal sense, the common sense, brings out all the psychological processes that were traditionally attributed to distinct powers of the soul.

87Id., « Peter of John Olivi on the Psychology of Animal Action », Journal of the History of Philosophy, 49, 2011, p. 413–438. This article analyzes different aspects of the complex psychological process that is behind animal (and human) action. Both cognitive and appetitive operations are dealt with, although the main emphasis is on the appetitive aspects of the process. A central aim of the article is to explain Olivi's complicated and sketchy view on the complex relation between emerging desires and the nature and condition of the body of an animal.

It points out that Aquinas' and Olivi's views are radically different, and that Dante’s conception is closer to the latter.

98Id., « Locating the Self Within the Soul : Thirteenth Century Discussions », in Ancient Philosophy of the Self, edited by P. Remes & J. Sihvola, Springer, 2008, p. 225-241. This article discusses thirteenth century developments in philosophical discussions concerning the soul, the body, and the experiencing subject (the self) which can be located somewhere within the soul-body compound. The major development happens in two stages: first, from Augustinian dualism of the first half of the century to Aquinas’ Aristotelianism ; and second, to a modern individualist conception of a rational and free self that was proposed by certain Franciscan authors, most notably Olivi.
