Palimpsestes n° 34

In the translators’ archive

Presentation

This issue of Palimpsestes is devoted to genetic translation studies, a field of research that focuses on identifying and analysing the documents that make up the “genetic dossier” of a translation: preparatory notes, drafts, sets of proofs, contracts, correspondences, etc. In theory, this object of study seems almost inexhaustible; in practice, however, such writings and/or drafts are limited (with rare exceptions) to a fairly short period of time, between the beginning and the end of the 20th century. Through numerous examples drawn from a number of archives, we will see that research on translators’ drafts can take various forms, following the translator with a minute attention to detail or ranging widely over a translator’s development or career. The study of translators’ drafts sheds light on the daily reality of their work and helps us chart its evolution over the years or from one project to another.
