27 | 2027 – The Nature of the Soul

Submission deadline : 1st October 2026

The yearly journal Philosophie antique will devote its 2027 special issue to The Nature of the Soul.

What is the nature of the soul?

The concept of the soul as the principle of life and animation is central to ancient philosophical anthropology. Conceived sometimes as an immaterial principle, sometimes as a specific corporeal entity united with or mingled with the body, it often shapes the philosophical doctrine that defends one conception or another. This call for papers aims to examine the nature of the soul in the various traditions of ancient philosophy: what it consists of and what it is made of, its immateriality or materiality, its definition, and the boundary separating the soul itself from lower levels ( such as the vegetative soul). Further lines of inquiry include the soul’s relation to the body and to the intellect, its roles in animation, motion, and life; an analysis of its properties and faculties; and the debate related to its immortality. It also includes the question of what link, if any, exists between individual souls and the universal soul.

Excluded from the scope of the call are isolated studies of a faculty of the soul (e.g., imagination or sensation), strictly ethical questions (e.g., the virtues or passions of the soul), and soteriological questions, such as the transmigration of souls.

Articles submitted to the journal (maximum 70,000 characters, including spaces, not including abstracts and bibliography) must be in .doc or .odt (and .pdf) format in unicode font. The files must be strictly anonymized (content, name of the file, metadata).

They must be written in French or English, accompanied by an abstract in French and English, and submitted to the journal's platform before October 1, 2027, using the link below :
