26 | 2026 – Philosophy of medicine

Submission deadline : 1st September 2025

The yearly journal Philosophie antique will devote its 2026 special issue to Philosophy of Medicine.

Contributions may address any topic that helps to elucidate the complex relationship between philosophy and medicine in their long common history, from the very beginnings of ancient philosophy. Empedocles, Alcmaeon of Crotone, Diogenes of Apollonia and Democritus introduced medicine into their philosophical reflections. At the time of its constitution as a technique, in particular within the Hippocratic Corpus, medicine nevertheless raised the question of whether or not it should take its principles from philosophy, in particular the philosophy of nature. These debates were extended and amplified in the Hellenistic and Imperial periods, notably with the figure of Galen, not only to build an epistemology of medicine that questioned its relationship to the bases of knowledge and the notion of truth, but also to question anew the division of knowledge and the role of medicine in a general architectonics based on the distinction between episteme and empeiria.

We will be particularly interested in proposals that address these relationships, be they considered in terms of hierarchy, rivalry or opposition, or as a relationship of coordination; we will also welcome texts that question the technical conception of medicine, understood as an art, or even a simple practical matter. The call is thus open to papers dealing with the specificity of the medical art, its methodology, limits and ethics. Proposals dealing with the traditional image of philosophy as medicine, and all associated metaphorical uses, are excluded.

Articles submitted to the journal (maximum 70,000 characters, including spaces, not including abstracts and bibliography) must be in .doc or .odt (and .pdf) format in unicode font.
