Didactique de la langue et élaboration grammaticale

Didactics of language and grammatical development
Edited by Caroline Masseron and Danielle Coltier

In this issue of Pratiques, we explore language didactics and grammatical development. In contrast to a traditional, one-size-fits-all approach to grammar, this issue looks at the diversity and complexity of grammatical usage from different perspectives.

Since its inception, the journal has often bypassed the term ‘grammar’, preferring more neutral and stylistic notions such as ‘language’. Past issues such as ‘Écriture et langue’ (1993) and ‘Argumentation et langue’ (1994) reflect this approach. More recently, themes such as ‘Questions de style’ (2007) and ‘La synonymie’ (2009) continue to broaden this perspective. The teaching of grammar is influenced by its aims and objectives. This issue aims to renew school grammar by presenting innovative approaches and useful analytical tools for teachers of French. The idea of progressive and reflective grammatical development is at the heart of our approach, integrating notions of representations and linguistic reasoning.

The issue is divided into several sections: cultural and epistemological insights, analyses of grammar as a crossroads of diverse issues, studies of spoken French and syntactic variations, and reflections on facts of language and complex grammatical objects. Finally, didactic perspectives and pedagogical innovations are proposed to rethink and improve the teaching of grammar. The contributions of the various authors provide an overview of the current state of play and suggest ways forward for a more dynamic approach to language teaching that is adapted to contemporary needs.

The issue is preceded by an editorial on 50 years of Pratiques and is followed by articles published as varia or reading notes.
