Foreword: multiproxy studies on continental carbonates: palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments.

1This special issue follows the 20th INQUA congress held in Dublin in July 2019, where we organized with the help of Julie Dabkowski a session on “Multiproxy studies on continental carbonates : palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments”.

2Continental carbonates have been extensively studied during the last few decades as supports for multidisciplinary palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental researches. Most efforts have been concentrated on speleothems, but investigations on tufa, travertine, lacustrine, palustrine, soil, and biogenic carbonates are also rapidly developing with improved and new technologies. Continental carbonates are highly suitable for combining geochemical approaches with direct dating on calcite (such as 14C, U/Th or ESR) or on quartz or feldspar grains embedded in calcite (OSL). Additionally, in most cases, bioproxies such as pollen, molluscs, leaf imprints, usually associated with these carbonates, allow synergic and independent palaeoenvironmental investigations.

3This special issue aims to illustrate the diversity of climatic and environmental data obtained from carbonates in continental archives. Five contributions have been compiled. They focus on carbonate proxies in continental archives deposited during the Quaternary period (from 2.5 Ma to present) in Europe using different methods. Aratman et al. report the lithofacies analysis of a giant travertine system in Turkey deposited during the early Quaternary to identify depositional environments. In the same framework, the methodological study of Claes et al., performing U/Th dating in two travertines in Turkey and Hungary, highlights the importance of using independent dating methods from surrounding lithologies to better constrain the temporal and depositional evolution of open-system behaviour of continental carbonates. Then, Dabkowski et al. present a multi-proxies compilation based on plant macrofossils, vertebrates, archaeological records and mollusc assemblages from the Resson Tufa (France). This study provides a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction at high‑resolution from an Eemian interglacial period. The non-marine mollusc succession of a Moroccan site studied by Wackenheim et al. yields an original palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Mid-Holocene in the Middle Atlas. Finally, the last article by Dragusin et al. focuses on the carbon isotopic composition of farmed calcite from two neighbouring stalagmites in a Romanian Cave and its relationship with CO2 outgassing and drip rate. This study provides new insights to understand the palaeoclimate information recorded from stable isotope composition of speleothems. 4This special issue clearly highlights the ongoing progress and importance of continental carbonate studies to the understanding of past climate and environment dynamics over the Quaternary period.
