Aims and scope

Principles

ReS Futurae (ReSF, Revue d'études sur la science-fiction) is a French-language, double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access online academic journal dedicated to the study of science fiction. Its aim is to provide an explicitly academic space to promote the visibility of science fiction scholars. Its publication model is based on the English-language Science Fiction Studies (SFS), a scholarly reference journal since its foundation in 1973.

Through a unique international partnership with SFS, ReSF has been able to translate some of the articles published by SFS in the “En direct de SFS” section. Conversely, ReSF has made its articles available to SFS for publication in English. SFS has been published by DePauw University (USA) between 1991 and 2025. Since 2025, it is published by University of California Press (https://online.ucpress.edu/sfs). In 2018, a similar partnership was formed with the reference journal Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction, published by the Science Fiction Foundation at the University of Liverpool.

ReSF aims to be a French-language forum for scientific debate and publication, dedicated to:

  • foster the emergence of a genuine scientific community of French-language academic research on science fiction;

  • give a place to French-language works, often neglected by English-language critics;

  • promote the exchange of knowledge between acquired English-speaking expertise and the structuring French-speaking expertise.

Typical contents

The sections of a ReS Futurae issue follow a basic outline:

  • Main section: a thematic dossier of feature articles

  • “Varia” section

  • “En direct de Science Fiction Studies” and “En direct de Foundation” sections

  • “Reviews” section

An online academic blog is associated with the journal, complementing it with a continuous feed of news and research notes: http://resf.hypotheses.org.
