Exil de Boulanger, exil du boulangisme ?

Jean Garrigues

Abstracts

Was the exile of Boulanger that of "boulangisme"? In this article, Jean Garrigues shows that the political career of general Boulanger was marked by exile and that his movement, "boulangisme", made an extensive use of the successive evictions of its chief out of power. This strategy finally became a trap that led to the disappearance of both the man and his movement. Instead of a martyrdom or a "time in the wilderness" which eventually offers the possibility of a successful return, exile then became an admission of powerlessness and failure. Through this analysis of exile as a double-edged weapon, Jean Garrigues invalidates the simplistic pseudo-psychological explanation of the depressed lover. Rather, it was the absence of a political direction that was the downfall of this "Caesar cut off from his troops".
