Entre monde judiciaire et philanthropie : la figure du juge-philanthrope au tournant des XIXème et XXème siècles
Abstracts
The judge philanthropist is a common figure of the judicial landscape and the best society of the XIXth century. What creates a link between the juridical world’s culture and the philanthropic commitment and conversely ? The magistrate-philanthropist is a committed personality thanks to its position (either acquired or claimed) he can promote ideas that will help building social institutions. Concerning juvenile delinquents, the magistrate-philanthropist is a character to be considered in a social and cultural history of magistracy and more widely in the history of justice. At the beginning of the century when a certain aspect of philanthropy is declining, such a personality is increasingly criticised because the ambiguity introduced by such a double activity in juridical practise. Such is the fate of G. Bonjean, a judge from Paris who created a patronage for young people in moral danger. He is a singular and characteristic figure of this period.
