La justice royale de Montferand (1425-1455)
Abstracts
In a difficult context for the french royalty (civil war Armagnacs-Bourguigons, war against England), the royal bailliage of Montferrand is created in 1425. Its territorial limits are not specified. The first bailli, Hervé du Mesnil, is a king’s man : he has to all his success from the sovereign. During 30 years, he extends his authority thrusting his judgments of appeal upon all the next lordships, like those of count Dolphin of Auvergne and duke of Bourbonnais. He expands also his efficiency increasing the number of his sergeants. So, he contributes to the extension of the king’s power in the region.
